Protest in Rome against blasphemy law
ROME: Italian lawmakers and religious associations protested here on Wednesday against Pakistan’s blasphemy law, calling for the release of a Christian woman sentenced to death under the legislation.
Catholic and Jewish associations joined human rights group Amnesty International and representatives of the Pakistani community in Italy in a 100-strong demonstration in front of the Italian parliament. “We want this law to be abolished,” Pakistani-born Joseph Philip told AFP, explaining that his uncle, a Catholic bishop, had been killed for his religious beliefs. He said he had come to the protest along with 15 compatriots. Aasia Bibi, a 45-year-old, Christian mother-of-five, was sentenced to death in November after Muslim women labourers who worked with her in the fields complained she made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Umberto Bossi, head of Italy’s anti-immigrant and populist Northern League Party and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s partner in the centre-right coalition, attended Wednesday’s protest here. “We want to express our solidarity,” he told journalists. A delegation from the protest also met Foreign Minister Franco Frattini. Last Thursday the European parliament urged President Asif Ali Zardari to pardon and release Aasia following calls from several countries, international organisations and an appeal by Pope Benedict XVI.
European parliamentarians also called on the Pakistani government to revise their blasphemy law and its application.
Their request followed the January 4 assassination of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, who was shot dead by his bodyguard after calling for reform of the blasphemy law used to sentence Aasia to death. afp
Re: Protest in Rome against Pakistan's blasphemy law
Confirms that ulma-e-karaam of most religions don't greatly differ when it comes to protests.
The head of Italy's anti-immigrant party might want to look into cases where people in Pakistan 'convert' to Christianity to gain immigration into Italy. I recently met a certain attendee of a local church called 'Syed Imran Hashmi'!
Re: Protest in Rome against Pakistan's blasphemy law
Hmmm are these the same Italians who supported right wing Mussolini not so long ago...?
Seriously people need to stop treading on each other otherwise it will just provoke more trouble....
Besides havent Italians got thier own problems to deal with, leave Pakistan to sort it's own mess out...

along the same line, i remember reading news in Pakistani papers 2-3 years ago how a christian missionary under the guess of a welfare society who offered free medical support, was converting muslims to christianity, most of them were poor people with very limited resource, and they were offered free medical treatment and financial support in return of conversion... this was in Karachi, in an annual christian gathering in YMC ground
Re: Protest in Rome against Pakistan's blasphemy law
^ there is a difference here... In burning American flags the symbolic refernce is clear Americans hurt Muslims by thier actions it's Muslims as a whole reacting in such way Pakistan is not alone in the Flag burning game you know...
But in terms of Blasphemy Laws here lies the strange bit... you see the Pope is trying to urge a change in Laws that don't even affect his flock whatsoever.
Most Christians in Pakistan are Anglican not even RC so why is the Pope so worried besides not a single Christian as far as I know has been placed in anything like the state the RC Church allowed in the days of the Inquisition so I would suggest the Pope to calm down a bit... First he might think about uniting his fractured Chruch before he goes on making trouble with more Muslims because in the end all it will do is put more fuel to flames.
Re: Protest in Rome against Pakistan's blasphemy law
Whether law is stupid or not, Romans should just STFU.
So do you apply the same standards when that Pastor tried to burn the Quran or the Danish Cartoons and all of Islamic World including Pakistan erupted in anger.
Why is that only Muslims can be angry about their religion? Why not Christians?
This Stupid Idiotic Barbaric Un-Islamic Border line Terrorist Law punishes Christians and thus Italy being where the Vatican is has a right to protest if you think Muslims have a right to protest when other events I mentioned happen as well.

errr, how does action of a person compare with law of a country again?

As should PAkistanis when Israel commits genocide in Gaza, or when Kashmiris are attacked by Indians, or when Iraqis are humiliated by American Soldiers etc etc.
You just dont like it when the show is on the other foot.

You cant critisize anyone unless your willing to submit to the same criticsm yourself, is the point here. If this is to hard for you to figure out, then Allah thera hafiz.

Dude, I am not in favor of this law to begin with but it doesn't help if people from far far away start shouting against it, it should come from within.

Its a globalized world my friend. Criticism isnt going to be limited to within ones own borders. Christians in Rome have as much right to express their grief and anger over this, as we do over those who publish hateful cartoons against the Prophet, although I doubt those protests against the cartoons were all that helpful either.
Besides; sometimes, criticism has to come from outside, because there are none willing to speak up within ones own borders. The voices of decent should be coming from inside, but where are they? Remember what happened the last time someone spoke up against this law?
Re: Protest in Rome against Pakistan's blasphemy law
If there is a law that persecutes Muslims in America will Pakistanis protest or not? When some pastor threatened to burn Quran, churches in Pakistan were vandalized and so much other stuff.
A person is unjustly being persecuted and Romans have every right to protest as they live in a democratic country.
