Re: Protein Shake Diet
Eating below maintenance has always been the key as far as weight loss is concerned, protein turns into fat only if its taken excessively.
A common misconception. Muscle can't turn into fat or vice versa. Excess protein will be expelled from the body.
Anyways, there is no need to take protein supplements unless you are weight lifting. Even then, it isn't really necessary.
Re: Protein Shake Diet
Generally, fats have about 9 calories gram while protein has 4. So if you are have a stomach full of egg whites, it contains less calories than the same amount of, say chocolate.
*RULE FOR WEIGHT LOSS: EAT LESS CALORIES THAN YOUR BODY NEEDS. *
If you are eating fewer calories, your body will need to oxidize fats to meet its needs. This leads to weight loss. There is NO OTHER WAY!
Protein shakes contain very little calories (coz they are all protein, no carbs, no fats) and you can therefore get enough protein to maintain your muscles without eating a lot of calories.

ChunkyMonkey never said that Muscle can turn into fat or fat can turn into muscle
He said eating excess protien will put on fat and that's true.

I've seen protien shakes with all sorts of rubbish in them, and they have LOTS of calories.
Pick and choose what you decide to drink

60 times out of 100 excess protein will be stored as glucose and turned into fat.
When protein is taken in, it breaks down into building blocks, Later it is further broken down and is turned into amino acids, the amino acids then are absorbed and they enter the blood stream. Some of the amino acids are utilized by the body according to its needs while the rest excess protein the body cannot make use of is converted into sugars and fats.

Protein supplements are not necessary as long as someone looking to build lean blocks of muscle mass can consume 1.5 grams or the absolute minimum 1 gram of protein for every pound their weight is, every single day through proper solid foods. i.e: 150 grams of Protein for someone who weighs 100 pounds.
100 grams cooked Chicken breast has about 27grams of Protein
1 glass (250ml) of whole milk consists of 8 grams of Protein
1 large sized Egg white consists of approximately 5 grams of Protein
If I was to consume 180grams of Protein every single day I would need 3 Chicken breasts, 5 glasses of whole milk and 10 egg whites, realistically something that is very difficult hence I would need to supplement myself with a Protein supplement to make up for the remaining grams of protein.
Emphasis needs to be put on the word Supplement, Protein supplements do not mean one can get away with just having supplements throughout the day. Solid foods should always be the 1st priority.
Re: Protein Shake Diet
I knew in Pakistan everything is damn expensive ![]()
Re: Protein Shake Diet
The price in Pakistan is understandable really, import/custom duties, shipping charges, and last but not the least a small margin of profit. I remember 2 years back the price used to be almost double the actual price, not many people knew about it back then hence the lack of demand, but now as the demand has increased, the prices have gone down as well. ![]()

Re: Protein Shake Diet
Please give a source or something. I searched a lot for it and couldn’t find anything that agreed with what you say.
Basically, protein is broken down when it’s in excess or when there are no other energy sources left.
When there’s an excess of proteins, they can be broken down and converted (depending on the structure) into acetyl-CoA, pyruvate or oxaloacetate. Acetyl-CoA is usually used for fat synthesis and pyruvate and oxaloacetate can undergo gluconeogenesis, making glucose in the process. However, it’s totally wrong to say that this will happen 60 out of a 100 times and anyways, there isn’t that much glucose produced to make you fat.
