Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

As some of you may know from my bitter posts in the past, our luggage has been broken into, twice in Pakistan, after checking them in at the airport. We only realized once we got our luggage on the other side that the lovely officials in Karachi went through and helped themselves to some of our stuff.

What can be done to avoid them this time? They weren’t valuables, but still, they went through our luggage after we checked them in.

Is there any place in the GTA we can get luggage sealed? The lock alone doesn’t seem to keep them away …

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

There is service at the GTA airport that put lot of plastic wrapping around it. Protects / seals / no cosmetic damage etc either.

$5 for big and $3 for small ones i believe. tax in.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Where at the airport? I checked their website and I can't see anything .... we're going from Terminal 1.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

I always tie my luggage tightly with nylon ropes before checking them in. keeps it from thiefs. They don't allow locks anymore but ropes is the least you can do.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves …

You can’t put locks on anymore??

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Not from/To USA. Not sure about where you are treaveling from/to.

P.S. Whats GTA?

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Greater Toronto Area

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Mehnaz, when my dad came back from Pak last year, he had his suitcases wrapped in plastic from the airport. But this was from Lahore to USA, I'm not sure if the same service is available in Toronto..

i traveled to Pak from USA last month, and there was no restrictions on locks.. however when u get to the manchester or heathrow airport, as well as coming back from pakistan, you're only allowed just one piece of carry-on, previously it used to be a carry on and a personal item, but economy and economy plus only allows one piece per person...

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

WTHHHHH Asif yaara are you serious?

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Ropes + Plastic = :( for the Pak "officials" :D

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Yes I am dead serious. This restriction has been imposed and has been in effect for years now, even for domestic travel. May be PIA don't enforce it but its there.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

like ppl have said, they do wrap the luggage in plastic at the airport if your are willing to pay. i myself never have any problems of missing/stolen luggage so far.

Asif2000: no locks? u must be joking...i have yet come come across any airline / airport that doesn't allow locks on luggage. i have traveled with canadian airlines, american airlines, PIA, gulf air, BA etc and no problems with locks whatsoever.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

^ same here. I know people who recently took PIA and other airlines and used locks and there was no problem with locks

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

Shrink wrap is available both on YYZ and KHI airports.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves …

I must be dreaming then. I know that we were asked to remove our locks while checking in luggage at more than two occassions. This may however be an airline policy rather than a U.S homeland security policy.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

There are some locks available which are homeland security approved, i.e. they can be opened by the security officials (not the Pakistani officials). If they do open and search your bag they leave a note inside stating the fact.

Re: Protecting Luggage from Thieves ...

yes, u can get ur luggage wrapped in plastic @ both pearson airport, as well as lahore and karachi aiports...u gotta help urself in toronto...in pak, they have staff operating the machines who'll do it for u...i forget the charges in both places, but it was nominal...
