How and why was he martyred?
as i have read in QASAS-ul-ANBIYAA, which in my view is no better than a fairytale book regards its authenticity, the king of that time married a woman and that woman had a daughter from an earlier marriage....
the king wanted to marry this daughter....
and he wanted the prophet to approve of the marriage which ofcourse the prophet wud not agree to cuz it was not allowed by religion....
hence first zakariya (as) and then yahya (as) were martyred....
i dont know how much truth there is to the story....
also another false story related to the martyrdom of yahya (as) is the blood springing from under the stones and raining from the skies....

i'm kept on telling him there was none.he was prophet and way b4 Rasool(SWA)was born.His father Zakariyya(AS)was the one who took care of Hazrat Maryam(AS).
