Proper Manners of Eating

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

"Jabir reported that Allah’s Messenger commanded the licking of fingers and the dish saying: ‘You do not know in what portion the blessing lies.’ "
(Sahih Muslim, page 1 120).

"When anyone eats food, he should not wipe his hands until he had licked it (hands and dish) himself or has given it to someone else to lick it.
(ibid., page 1 119).

The Companions used to even lick the Prophet(SAW)'s fingers. And what a beautiful practice this is.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

o.k. this is the first time I am hearing it is sunnah to lick a dish.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

Dont worry…you won’t be the only one.
Licking the dish is actually done by wiping the dish with the finger and licking the finger.

Remember Allah’s Messenger(SAW) has commanded it so it seems to more stronger than just a Sunnah.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

ah, of course. The way it was described in your initial post made it sound like you actually lick the plate, pateeli, etc. with your tongue.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

Is there an etiquette for licking fingers or not? Isn’t it something along the line of not letting more than just the tips of your fingers get covered with foods. I cannot for a moment imagine the Holy Prophet :saw: or his companions having any more than that of their fingers covered with food and then licking them top to bottom. I bet even you manage to get more food than that on ur hands hareem.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

^ok.......now I understand....I was reading your post as though you were negating eating with the hands. Incidentally would you lick somebody elses plate? The reason why I ask is that people may be disgusted by a lot less than what you described, but do we let this stop our Sunnah. May be yes and no it depends on the situation and the people we are with. However, we should never hate or dislike or be ashamed of a Sunnah that is all I'm saying.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

When we were in Karachi, my mom ended up going to this dars kind of milad. The zakira was trying to be scientific but Islamic at the same time. She said that the minerals and vitamins are stick to the bottom of the plate so we should lick the plates with fingers after finishing the food. So at the dinner time my mom was sitting with some aunty and after finishing the food the aunty started licking the plate with fingers and said “hun vatamin bhee kha litay jain, aye nali wich he na chalay jaan”…everyone busted into laughter

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

^Good way of making fun of Prophet's saying. Post this in Rated jokes. People like you will enjoy it.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

I wasn't making fun, I think it was the zakira with lack of knowledge.

Rest, I know licking plate is considered sunnah and if you do lick, then you are supposed to do it in a hygienic way and just lick with the tip of the finger and wash your hands immediately after eating.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

Did Prophet Muhammad :saw: say that vitamins and mineral settle at the bottom of the plate too? or is the reason behind this more along the lines of not wasting food and consuming every last bit of it?

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

I do

but some times I don’t do it too because it is not a sin not to use tools… Sin is when you consider a sunnah as a backward thing that should not be followed at all.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

^^ True

....and I think no one here is considering sunnah as backward .... it is just the matter that with advancement of everything else, the food has also kind of become complex/complicated (whatever you say), it is no more your simple roti with a bowl of yakhni.

Also we are asked to eat food in a way that won't gross other people sitting with us therefore it really doesn't matter if you use forks, knifes, chop sticks, or hands as far as we can keep it clean, respect other people sitting around us or eating with us, and not waste the food at the same time. :)

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

Exactly. It’s culture. It was culture at the time of the prophet, so in peoples’ zeal to imitate everthing he did they consider it as part of the religion.

Isn’t it telling that a majority don’t eat with their fingers (or lick someone elses’ plate or fingers!) in public? If it were to honor the prophet, it should be done in public as well as in private. To not do so is to be ashamed.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

Subhanallah, this thread has gone to 3 pages.. !!!

Even the people who reject sunnah are in debate, even the non-muslims. This is great.

anyways a brother said the following after reading the article:

[QUOTE]
First, there are etiquettes to how to lick/clean your fingers. You should not stick your whole finger in your mouth to clean them, rather, you should only clean the sides of your fingers. This should not even be done in one shot, rather either start at the tip of your finger and work your way down, or vice versa.

Also, when drinking from a glass, while eating with your hands, it is actually preferred to hold glass with your left hand if there is a lot of food on your right hand. However, to fulfill the sunnah, all you need to do is support the base of the glass with the back of your hand.

These points should be considered while eating with others so you do not gross out other people who are eating around you (cleanliness, hygiene and respect for others are important aspects of dean). Also, if the glass is smeared with rice, curry, and other things, it will not be very appealing to the next person who uses the glass.

my last post in this thread. salam

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

when are the times you don’t AQ and why? Is it because you are ashamed to eat with your hands in certain setup? What could be important enough to stop you from honouring the Prophet :saw: and making you opt for spoons and forks instead?

Point is that just because someone is not eating using their hands or refuses to use their hands at all times does not mean he/she loves and respects the prophet any less than someone who eats using his hands. That is not the criteria. With all these ahadeeth pulled out left and right some people make it sound like all spoon users are bound to hell or have incurred the wrath of God or are just not good enough, or deem sunnah as backward. Let everyone be.

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

nauzubillah! sister, this is not the case, people are posting hadiths only because they love Allah and His Rasool!

Re: Proper Manners of Eating

^FF chanda
when I find places where I do not have water to wash my hands

example:

Allu cholaY, dahi baRay waalaY kaa Thelaa

Gol GappaY, unfortunately (or fortunately) can not be eaten by forks and spoon

.. I use hand while eating Bun kabaabz though... Pizza came in the same category

However, I use spoon for eating ice cream, faalooda etc... nonetheless, gola ganda requires me to use my hands...

Re: Proper Manners of Eating
