Promotions at work.

From time to time I see memos. in my internal email inbox , telling me someone got promoted and that memo asks reader to congratulate the person getting promoted.
Now you are career gurus out there answer these questions:

  1. Should I send congratution via email to the person even though I do not know them or I should send it to only those I know.
  2. Should I leave a formal paper greeting card at their desk ?
  3. Are they looking forward to getting congatulation on their achivement ?
  4. Would they hold grudge against those who did not congratulate them ?
  5. Would they develop high regards for those who congratulated them ?
  6. If no research has been done on this topic please those of you who are still in universities make it topic of your thesis.

Personaly I never cared about getting congatulatory messages or cards or what not.

Re: Promotions at work.

If I don't know the person well, I would typically send an email note congratulating the person - taking this as an opportunity to also introduce myself if I think the other person doesn't know me either.

If I already have some level of contact with the other person, even if it's just through departmental meetings, I would stop by their office to congratulate them in person.

Beyond these, I've never sent formal greeting cards on promotions.

Mirch, Which country are u in?

Here in Ireland, they keep everything a secret... from exam results to promotions in the work place, nothing is ever published... unless ofcourse its a management change.

This is the first time I've heard of a company sending around memos asking u to congratulate those who got promoted.. over here, everything is done privately and we only find out about promotions etc, when the person himself tells us he got promoted.. so then u just say "Oh wow, Congrats..." ... no greeting cards or anything like that...

If its a management change, that will be published on the company's website but they never really expect us to do anything like send off cards etc.

that's just creepy/stalkerish. If you're not in my dept, I don't want any congrats emails.

Didn't I tell you to get a job with some decent company. Just kidding. :)
It is a norm in big corporation in USA to send memo to announce a promotion. It provides a big sense of achievement to those who get promoted.

Fully agreed with LC.

You really need to get a job.

Re: Promotions at work.

I think if you know that person and that person knows you even by any slightest chance, you should send atleast an email of congratulations. If you go at his/her desk and congratulate them, that will be far better. That depends upon how buisy you and that person are.

Yes, there are ppl who hold grudge though those are not that many. But you dont do it for them, do it for yourself cuz you are the person of strong character.
Just my two cents...

Thanks for your two cents. I wish you had contributed a million dollars. :)

Re: Promotions at work.

-------No, If somebody who doesn’t know me sends me a congratz, I would assume that you want something from me…thats how it goes here..So, dont know=dont send.

Nah, thats too much work.

Maybe from people they know, but not exactly from colleagues who they dont interact with.

If you are a person they know…very well or not so well…then, maybe. I don’t bother, not sure about the others.

it does give a sense of happiness and pride and having acheived something…but nothing extra-ordinary

:hehe:

Re: Promotions at work.

You know when they send out those promotions emails companies are following HR protocol...they have to. So if you don't know the person...don't feel obliged to send an email...i know i wouldn't! But if your acquaintances then yea I would. I don't think sending an email would make anyone have a higher regard for you...they probabaly are soooo busy they might not even read it if they don't know who you are. But then again do whatever your comfortable with!

My God that is a news to me. I did not know. I was thinking that they were appreciative of the person , who got a well deserved promotion and wanted to motivate others to work hard to see their name in the list.

Re: Promotions at work.

^ That's the HR protocol.
