JF-17 Conducts Formal Test Flight At Chengdu China

September 04, 2003: Sino-Pak fighter aircraft FC-1/JF-17 Thunder was successfully tested, said Chinese sources on Wednesday. “We have developed an advanced, multipurpose light fighter plane to meet the needs of overseas customers,” the sources said. Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Kaleem Saadat also attended the formal launching ceremony.

The state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reports that the maiden eight-minutes flight of the plane, named Xiaolong/FC-1, or fierce dragon, proved successful in Wenjiang Airport in Chengdu, capital of south-west China’s Sichuan province. During the show the plane demonstrated its outstanding mobility, good interception and ground attack capability, according to the report. With advanced design and manufacturing technology, the plane has the comprehensive combat capability of a third generation fighter plane and is on par with the world’s most advanced fighter planes, the report said.

The report said the plane is small in size and low in cost and suitable for modern warfare and the demands of military fighters. It took about four years for Chengdu Aircraft Group Corp, in cooperation with China Aero Technology Import & Export Co, to develop the plane. Pakistani Air Force officials say production of the JF-17 Thunder, which will be capable of delivering short-range and other missiles, is scheduled to begin in January 2006. China is Pakistan’s main defence supplier. The two countries have cooperated on a number of projects.

In the latest development wrt this project, India after two decades and billions down the drain in failing to indigenously develop a low tech fighter plane has decided to place an initial order of 200 FC-1s, with an option to buy another 200.....

JF-17 project launched: Minimum deterrence will be maintained

KAMRA: President Pervez Musharraf said on Tuesday that the launch of the JF-17 Thunder aircraft production project was “a giant leap towards indigenisation and self-reliance” and that Pakistan would maintain a minimum level of defensive deterrence in both the conventional and unconventional fields, as it wanted peace with dignity and honour.

Addressing the project’s launching ceremony at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, President Musharraf said it reflected the good relations between China and Pakistan (jointly producing the multi-role fighter aircraft).

“China-Pakistan relations are strengthening and will be further strengthened by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao’s visit,” he said, hours before the Chinese premier arrived in Pakistan.

“Pakistan has come a long way and stands at the threshold of a major leap forward by acquiring indigenous capability of manufacturing the JF-17 aircraft, which will form the backbone of the Pakistan Air Force,” he said, adding that Pakistan stood for peace, but jealously guarded its sovereignty. “We want peace but we want it with honour and dignity,” the president said.

Pakistan would continue maintaining its strategy of defensive deterrence, which had been quantified in both conventional and unconventional fields, he said, expressing Islamabad’s determination not to compromise on the minimum deterrence level in both fields. Pakistan has evaluated the requirements of its armed forces for the next 15 years and has said the country has both the resources and skilled manpower to meet the 15-year target and maintain a defensive deterrence strategy.

He said Pakistan had identified certain targets for its air force and one of them was acquiring the F-16 aircraft. However, he said Pakistan would also continue looking at other options for state-of-the-art aircraft, as it would be in line with the government’s policy of diversification. With the induction of state-of-the-art fighter planes, PAF would become a force to reckon with, he added.

“It is a momentous occasion for Pakistan and PAF,” he said, adding that Chinese-Pakistani defence collaboration was important, especially in the conventional field. “The joint production of the JF-17 Thunder symbolises this friendship,” President Musharraf added. app
