I currently work as an IT Project Manager. I have been thinking about getting the PMP designation. Does any body have any tips for preparing for the exam and actually about the exam itself?
How are the bootcamp offered by PMStudy.com, learningTree and other institutions? Are they any good?
I know someone who has recently written the PMP exam by self studying. You don't actually need to attend to the bootcamp classes if you are disciplined and can give PMP study 2 hrs each day. You should be ready in 2 months to write it. Bootcamp classes mainly just focus on exam questions and prepare you for those. If you already know PMP basics and concepts then you can attend them. They are pretty expensive though.
I self-studied. Downloaded a couple of books and read them. The main thing is to do as many practice questions and sample exams as possible. It took me about 3 months of study of about 1 hour a day and about 3/4 hours a week before the exam.

PMP Eligibility OverviewTo apply for the PMP, you need to have either:
A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or the global equivalent) with at least five years of project management experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.
OR
A four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or the global equivalent) and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.
I have gotten the PMBOK and RITA MULCAHY'S PMP Exam Prep book and have started reading the PMBOK already. The curriculum/exam is changing Aug 1. I plan to write and pass (inshaAllah) the exam before this change.

The requirements is to have formal 35 hours of training & education. They can be online classes mostly to with the PM life cycle.
For the exam - it's a good idea to do a 1/2 week bootcamp. I don't know about PMstudy. I took mine from SkillSoft. Make sure you take a actual sample test because all the ones in the books are not a good indication of what the test actually looks like. The test is mostly on application of the knowledge and not the material itself.
Understanding the input/outputs of each one cycle and how the correlate into another is essential.
Alhamdolillah, I passed the PMP exam this week. As njgal mentioned, the exam mostly tested the application of the knowledge with all sorts of scenario based questions. If someone needs any help with preparation do not hesitate to contact me and I'll be glad to help!
