Progress in FATA

Local govt system for Fata in the offing | DAWN.COM

About time. This legislation will bring FATA one step closer into the fold and limit the roles of the Political Agents and local jirgas to an extent. More so FATA would stop looking like Afghanistan.

Re: Progress in FATA

That's good, FCR should be removed and FATA should be made a province and brought under the judicial system of the country. As far as the local bodies are concerned, I have not seen any elections in the rest of the country. What good will the system be if they will never conduct elections?

Re: Progress in FATA

We can not do that easily but there is a very simple way .
They should be asked to make their own law .

Re: Progress in FATA

Problem is that if they are asked to make their own law then we will see something along the lines of what recently happened "no alone woman in bazaar".

Re: Progress in FATA

when FCR is removed, people in FATA will be able to live a peaceful life.

if the local government is introduced, will they hold elections there then? so the locals can elect their representatives?

Re: Progress in FATA

According to the article yes. They will hold elections.

Re: Progress in FATA

I also read, they will have local councils which will give seats to women and minorities, now that's really a step into a right direction!!

Re: Progress in FATA

Yeah the only problem is that it is not in line with the other provinces of Pakistan. This looks more akin to the system in Afghanistan, which is not a good move at all. The Provincial Council here in Farah has over sight on all line department activities and function very much similar to the local councils as explained in the articles.

If the PPP wants to do this right they just need to bring the entire system in line with the rest of the country.

Re: Progress in FATA

right. the local government system should be on the pattern of other provinces. at the end of the day, if locals are not happy, there is just no point of all this.

Also, Like Ali Syed said, it should be made a seperate province, give FATA provincial status. this is what locals want, they dont want to see it merge with KP province.Like right now, they have a common governor from KP province, and in the article it says, some people are not happy with handing over the power to the governor. they are not really doing any developments in FATA, but at the same time they are running the administration from KP. Strange.

give the power and responsibilities to the locals, this way they will have their own representatives running the administration
