Professionalism / Personal Issues

salams

We have this awards program in our company where you can nominate a coworker for a recognition if you see them doing a “good job” and mention why you are nominating them briefly. Every nominee gets a token and then at the end of a certain period of time the employee with the higest number of tokens (ie the nominee with the highest number of nominations) gets a small monetary recognition.

It remains anonymous who sent you a nomination but conversely if you got zero then you know that nobody did.

We have to send nominations monthly and today was the last working day of the month so everyone was sending nominations to the management today.

I have no idea who is sending me nominations, personally I don’t even think I deserve any and it really doesn’t matter to me, the whole scheme in fact seems childish, but khayr my situation was:

  • I have 2 close friends in the office. I don’t expect a nomination from either of them to be honest but I’m not sure if they do from me, I think one does and one doesn’t. But I’ll feel terrible if they nominated me and I didn’t nominate them.

  • My 2 supervisors, 1 in the Karachi office and 1 in our America office have both have been very kind to me recently.

  • 1 guy in my department helped me with something major.

  • 1 guy in another department did a favor to everyone in our department and is already getting a lot of nominations (he always struck me as arrogant which made me not want to nominate him but I guess thats a different matter and should be kept separate besides I guess maybe he doesn’t realise he’s so stuck up and after all he did help everyone with that thing.) .

  • 1 guy in the IT department has been very helpful and humble with his help.

This totals to 7 people that I had in mind for sending the nominations for, which are too many, plus my friend said that my supervisors job was to be cooperative with me and it was nothing professionally great if someone was helpful to me. So that doesn’t sound like a professional reason to nominate someone.

I thought for a long time about who to send nominations for and who not to send for but I’m still undecided. I think I’ll just go ahead and send for all 7 and not care if 7 sounds too many and if my reason sounds unprofessional then I can just try to phrase it differently and give it a professional touch.

!!- 1 guy in my department helped me with something major. !!

Give it to him.

Saadia baji what about the rest? I can give more than one.

So what's the point of giving all of them, when you can give nominations each month. I think you should not give for the sake of giving to everyone U like, like your friends but to those who U think really deserved it. Like if someone helped you or if someone did a good thing for a group or someone is working really hard ect...

I know its a hard decision but who is suppose to know and as you said its really silly, then just give 3 the most.

I hope it helped, I know it might not make sense.

Saadia baji thats the thing, its so tough to decide :bummer:

I think this month I will send to everyone coz its the first time I’m sending and then from next month I will send only to people who I think really deserve it for the reasons you mentioned:

if someone helped you or if someone did a good thing for a group or someone is working really hard ect…

hmmm done

ended up sending 8 in all

end mein aik aur banda bhee yaad aa gya tha who helped me a lot recently

Irem, was a tough decision definitely...but i guess you did the right thing sending it out for all those you thought who desreved it.

apart from that, the question that came up was how to draw the line between professional and personal stuff and preferences... so in this case if one becomes a true hard core strict professionalist the vote for the person having done a personal favour will have to go...cause being really professional would mean thinking about the 'good job' done for the team and the organization and not just self. but it sure is easy saying this than acting on it, i can imagine how complicated this stuff can become, and after all we are all human so our prefernces and inclinations do get affected by ppl and their behaviour towards us personally.

btw do let us know how many you got!

Haris mujhay aik THENGA milnay wala hae :D

I think there is a reason it is kept anonymous. Plus, no restriction on how many you can send, means an ideal opportunity to suck up to all the bosses (sorry for the crude expression)... but hey! what the heck... who cares. Just make everyone happy.

Idea is not bad... we should implement it in our office as well... hmmm... thinking
