Prof. Abdus Salam

The only nobel prize winner from Pakistan is never discussed in Pakistan. More so, he wasn’t welcomed in Pakistan. Why so? Just cuz he belonged to the Ahmadiyya community which is not recognized in Islam? (The second link says he was a devout muslim)

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

What's more pathetic is that every year, many students from Pakistan avail the scholarships that were instigated by Dr. Salam through the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

The various instances of the shabby treatment meted out to Salam by the Pakistani Govt. are truly reprehensible… if only he had his own country’s support when he wanted to run for the position of the Director General of UNESCO in the 80s, if only he was allowed to publicly talk to the students who wanted to learn from him.

And even after his death, he has never been honored in his home country… this year was his tenth anniversary but there was no media coverage, no articles, nothing. The only way I remembered was a special day organized by the Engineering Dept. here at my University...

Yup... that’s how we treat our Nobel Laureates.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

He was a outstanding citizen and should be celebrated as such. His religious standing has no bearing on his brilliance as a scientist.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

He wasn't welcomed in Pakistan. Bhutto avoided him on advise of Islamic scholars. He isn't revered in Pakistan at all.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

only if our esteemed leaders understood this...

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

First off, the most famous scientist in Pakistan is Abdus Salam. Second, Pakistanis have also won other Nobels. Thirdly, Abdus Salam memorial lectures occur all over Pakistan. Link is one such. Fourthly, the government could not fund his research because of the poverty coming with Pakistan’s colonial legacy.

Some of you on here are so bonga.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

Pakistan is such an idiot in this matter..... honour him as a good scientist and let alone his religious beliefs.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

He never asked for any funding… he had all of that from various other research institutes all around the world.

The fact remains that he was never honored as a Pakistani citizen only because of his religious background. Like I said, show me one item in media coverage on his tenth anniversary which just passed several weeks ago.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

There was this link in the Daily Times, if it works about GCU going on about it.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

I am sure you haven’t been to Pakistan in a long time.. go and talk to ppl about Abdus Salam- ppl either avoid talking about him or say bad words.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

They say bad words because he has helped India with its nuclear and weapons of mass destruction… but it is fault of government of Pakistan that he is there in the first place. :grumpy:

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

Last time i checked Dr. Abdus Salam found SUPARCO in Pakista, and SUPARCO is Pak fed gov't funded organization.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

^ that centre was established back in the 60s' when he also helped found the Atomic Energy Commission.

Despite these tremendous achievements, post 1974 when Ahmadis were declared "infidels", non of the subsequent Govts. could see beyond his religious proclivities! Even the Nobel Prize in 1979 didn't do much for them to give him the recognition that he deserved.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

two links have already been given..one from a famous newspaper, the other Suparco. What more do you want?

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

^ read my post above... why is it difficult to comprehend that he was never given any recognition post 60s! both Suparco and AEC were established in 60s and has been managed by others since - and that newspaper link doesn't work... but if there was an article, then hats off to them!

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

Google search government college and him and it'll come up.

From PTV World News.

In 1987, he was made a Fellow of the Pakistan National Academy of Sciences.

You’re all a bunch of bongas.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

^ for that matter, he has also been "rewarded" with an honorary Ph.D. by QAU but only if you knew the humiliating circumstances when this was announced and the University was unable to go ahead with their plans and had to grant him that doctorate in a more private setting due to the ongoing politics and protests around him. Yes... I call that a reward !

Looking at the posts mentioned above, which of these was an "active" position... none... and again, most of these were in the 60s - as a reminder, the Ahmadi persecution started a little after 1974/75.

Khair, I'm not in the mood to argue... I've heard and seen enough people in Pakistan who opposed him in his time.

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

That’s merely his biography - big deal !

Re: Prof. Abdus Salam

Do you even have a clue as to who the topic pertains to?
