Problems with Laptop (Vista)

Hi

I am having multiple problems with my laptop. I have a Toshiba pre-installed with Vista.

All of a sudden, yesterday, the internet on the laptop stopped working. I have a desktop computer as well, and the internet on the other computer was working fine.

Anytime I re-started my computer, the following error message pops up from Microsoft Windows:

Host Process for Windows Services Stopped Working and was Closed.

Then, I get a pop up from Norton Anti-Virus, saying:

Auto-Protect Experienced an Unexpected Error, 0x000003E8

Everything freezes and I can’t even shut down the computer and have to wait for the battery to drain.

I have tried re-starting it in ‘Safe Mode with Networking’. Yesterday, in this mode, the Internet was working, but today it is not working at all.

I am at a loss as to what to do. The problem is on the laptop only. I have searched online on my desktop computer and this could be a malware/virus destroying my laptop … but I don’t know how to get rid of it when I have no internet access to download software which can search and destroy it.

I’ve tried downloading Malewarebytes on my desktop and transferred it onto my laptop. It won’t work on the laptop, but works fine on the desktop.

I’ve tried going into the Event Log on the laptop to see what exactly happened, but an error message comes up saying Event Log is not functioning.

Can anybody help me please?

I am having the same problem since yesterday on my VISTA machine! I can't go online, nor any other program which connects to internet is able to connect. I ran SpyBot, Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware and Anti viruses and nothing comes up. And it gets weird, on the same machine, if I go to Virtual PC and start Windows XP or Ubuntu; it CONECTS to internet!

Re: Problems with Laptop (Vista)

Well, I finally got MalwareBytes to work. I had to change the name of the file, under Program Files, otherwise it would not work.

I have a virus (Trojan) on my laptop, so of course it won't allow me to open up any type of anti-virus program.

I have two Trojans actually .... but they are not cureable. So I'm not sure how to get rid of them. :(

ok I fixed my PC. do the following.

  1. Install SpyBot search and destroy. (download link provided in sticky thread here)
  2. when installing DO NOT select "upadate definitions".
  3. once installed go to download.com and download latest definition file and install MANUALY.
  4. goto programs and rename spybot exe file name and run.

This malware changes the DNS in windows system files, and also disables anti-malware and virus protection programs. Run SpyBot in administrator mode or else you won't be able to delete registry enteries.

in TCP/IP and IPv4 settings make sure DNS is not changed to something else. (in my case it was changed to 85.xxx.xxx.xxx.

your system should be ok after a restart.

Re: Problems with Laptop (Vista)

If my computer was acting strange I wouldn't trust it to be cured by any of these programs. Reinstall the OS (after you do a good backup of your files) and that's the only way to get this part done.
