I am not a big fan (haha) of Bush or his current administration. Though I realize that the Republican Party is not monolithic in its views. For instance, I find most of the views shared by people like Sen. John McCain pretty interesting and appealing.
For starters, they have racial issues. Living in the south & accessing from the staunch republicans around, I don’t see it just being a person or two issues, like they made it in the case of Trent Lott. It seems that they appeal to pseudo-raciest voter base.
It’s not only about the blacks but seem to have a problem with ethnicities in general. For example, **Bush’s “diversity” doctrine**in the case of Michigan Univ. is one example but guess what the head of the homeland-security subcommittee, Howard Coble had to say about the detention camps for Japanese in the WW-II

My question is to those who know American politics in a little more depth. Where do people like Powell or McCain stand when it comes to having the support inside the Republican party? Are they moderates who can’t get along with Democrats and so have joined the other side or do they represent the more moderate thought in the GOP?
aj
u have the ultra-conservative (read racist bigots) who just attach their own, and I suppose their constituents biggoted agenda to the republican party.
I suppose the whole dealmaking means that you have to work with them so its a give and take relationship even among ppl in the same party. you support me on this and in return I will support you on that etc.
But then there are the moderate republicans.. and i believe there are more of them, although I am puzzled why they would elect a person liek Lott to his former position in teh first place. His record and history was no secret.
socially liberal and fiscally conservative is the way to be. there are ppl in both political parties who ascribe to that doctrine, but clearly not enough.
Powell etc are centrists, vs even you right wingers like rumsfeld and Cheney (btw has anyone found him yet), but while they disagree on some issues they may agree on more issues.
Clinton e.g. was a dem, but a centrist as well. a conservative in many ways.
Dubya republicans are the worst kind. They are like the Reagan republicans. Gingrichites, whose conservative agenda can make Wallace look like Rosa Parks are also part of Dubya's constituency. Oh how I long for George Bush 1. Now there was a moderate republican who led by example and if only people could understand Macro economics would have saved us from Clinton. :(
You got a point there Mr.F,where has Mr. Cheney gone?
they are maybe hiding him and his halliburton and other energy "dealings" skeletons. I dont know.
ahmadjee.. sometimes the bigoted idiots within the Republican party appear to be more 'human' than the others with Novus Ordo Seclorum agendas.
