Working muslims `in the western world plan their vacations months in advance. Book tickets, make hotel arrangements everything way ahead of time. Yet no one remembers to book 2 days off for Eid. Around eid time everyone grumbles theyre too embarassed to ask their managers for 2 days off because theyre not sure if Eid is on one day or the other. Why is taking time off on eid not the top priority for us?
Why is taking a day off on Eid not a priority for anyone? Most people end up working on Eid or call the night before calling in sick.
You still have time. Apply now for 2 days off for Eid-ul-Adha. Thanks.
Hey at my previous job I used to schedule 3 days for each eid at the very beginning of the year that way no matter when Eid was I still got atleast two days off. I think its pathetic when ppl choose to work on Eid. Now however the loser I work for only gives me one day off and thats a blahdy desi. I miss my gora company
Nowadays Eid normally ends after namaz and breakfast. Meeting friends and family happens in the evening therefore taking a day off is kind of pointless.
I agree not knowing the exact day of eid adds to the confusion in decision making process.
We need a change. Instead of waiting for the moon, god should arrange the stars in such a way that they read "As$holes, tomorrow is roza" or "Ulu kay patho kal eid mana lo". That would be convenient.
Fayz even if it was obvious ppl would find some way to argue about it :)
2 years ago was one of the best eids in US for me, myself and all the pals decided that we are all going to take the day off, my folks were here, my bros were here, went ofr eid namaz together, came bck home and we had an open house so ppl kept dropping by, it was nice.
I think tis becomes more and more important as u have rowing kids who need to see from an early age that this is meaningful. We need to make a big deal about it.
Even though the moon was sighted ppl still managed to split eid between monday and tuesday so i doubt the star spelling s would help fayz. The problem is that no one bothers to do anything special for EId which is why it turns into such a bore for most people and then u have eveyrone whining the next day about how boring it was. Everyone may not have family but everyone does have friends and thats all u need to have a fun eid.
I don't understand why people don't take time off and try to make the holiday more special.
Maybe it's because I'm a convert and when I was first married I really missed the hustle and bustle that came with Christmas, but we make a really big deal of Eid at our house. No one goes to work, no one goes to school, and even if it were just the 6 of us, we would still have a big party and presents after prayers or, in the case of Eid-ul-Adha, the qurbani.
I think that parents owe it to their children to make the Eids special, especially in the West where it isn't the dominant holiday.
I don't understand why do people whine that they had to work on Eid. I mean we all get atleast a week or 2 weeks or more of vacation time every year then some floating holidays etc etc. Why can't we take a couple of days off.
Besides, now-a-days we do know the eid date in advance. I know its not 100% correct but usually its accurate. In California we knew the eid date few weeks ago and it was correct.
Also i think usually the managment is not very strict about it. If we ask for 2 days off and then end up taking only 1 day off. I'm sure, they'll be fine. How hard is it to explain them - it shouldn't be embarrasing, its our religion. If we are embarrased of something thats related to our religion then am sorry, we might not even deserve to celebrate.
Its just an excuse that some of us make to save the vacation time for other purposes. (students are exceptions though since they can't ask to cancel an exam etc.)
:)
If you plan ahead, you will save up beforehand until you have enough extra to cover those two days. And even if you havent saved.. just pretend you got a $200 speeding ticket. Khatam kahaani.
You’re right. Do you think the Jews feel ashamed for asking days off? Oh wait no they get all their freakin holidays off (at least in my college). Christmas is a national holiday, wehther you’re christian or not. So why the hell should you, as a Muslim, feel ashamed for asking for a day off? That’s just plain insecurity to me.
Speaking from a studen’ts point of view, I have never ever ever been to school on Eid days, i always took a day or two off and I always thot those who went to school for no good reason were quite pathetic.. In grammar/junior/high school its no big deal to take a day off, but in college it’s not a good idea to skip class unless you have a good reason (and this counts).
But at the same time, as I experienced thsi year, students cannot get out of assignments or exams. For example, this year, i got lucky in my second class, my professor was understanding and let me take my midterm later; my other professor was being a cow abt not letting me hand in my assignemnt a day late or even email it to her. Even though things worked out fine (all guests showed up after I got home at 4 PM. So my nice professor will get special mithai for being so nice
We have calendars and timings for all 5 daily prayers with sunrise/sunset timings for the whole year. Why can't we have it for moon? ...... Even though technically it is possible.
Logically, when there were no clocks/wrist-watches at the time of Sahaba, they 'd pray Fajr/Maghrib or other prayers by looking at Sun. Nothing was pre calculated for daily prayers at that time. But we do have it for daily prayers now......... Like maulvi sahab won't even look outside whether the Sun has set (for Maghrib or not), and would call aazan just at the calculated time. Then why can't we do that in terms of moon?
I donot know about taking the day off. At my job, my Boss knew first hand when Eid was there so I had plenty of time to go pray and do whatever next and than go to work. Its not that bad if you work during holidays, just take your time and enjoy the event.
