In his first speech to the nation on 17 October 1999, the President layed out his 7-Point aims and objectives for the nation…lets see the achievements after 5 years.
No. 1- rebuilds national confidence and morale
That has been done for sure, thanks to the excellent security provided to the president, he is confident and his morale is very high, that he would survive the third attempt as well. “Afterall” he is the nation ji.
No. 2 - strengthen federation, remove inter-provincial disharmony and restore national cohesion
During the last few months his administration has shown the real power of federation, any Bloch or Wazirstan tribesman would happily testify to that. Not to mention the democratic process introduced in Sindh parliament to ensure inter-provincial harmony.
No. 3 - revive [the] economy and restore investors’ confidence
All agree, the selected Prime Minister is loyal to Pakistan and not to any Citibank or any other multinational corporation. The Call centers are going to be the backbone of our economy in 2010. The guys in Narowal will all be provided wireless high-speed Internet connections while plowing their fields with supercharged cows. And the Chaudries will develop direct taxation system for these high tech agricultural jobs in Punjab, thanks to the president.
No. 4 - ensure law and order and dispense speedy justice
Speedy Justice is here to stay, no one can talk about national security, even if he has a letter from the army, no corrupt ex- prime minister can enter Pakistan, and if you have a case against the selected prime minister then you will spend three weeks in GHQ. For the ordinary people the police have been very active and vigilant just last week they were able to stop several bomb blasts in different cities in Punjab. Punjab Police is the spearhead in the fight against “everyone”, and they are the most uncorrupt police force in Pakistan.
No. 5 - depoliticise state institutions
The President has done an excellent job in de-politicising the parliament, and the rest will follow.
No. 6 - devolution of power to the grassroots level; and lastly
General Nqvi’s life long dream has come true. Now nobody knows who’s the mayor of Lahore. Sorry now they have Nazim (administrator) who is still in control of the Khakroops union of municipality.
No. 7 - ensure swift … accountability
Almost all members of the previous parliament except the two Mian brothers are not only back in parliament but are back in federal cabinet. It took some time but the accountability process was very swift. Many inmates of local jails were hanged to death. PPP is totally dysfunctional, because it had only one member and she is out of country on self exile. The rest of the members went through the tough accountability process and are know as federal cabinet ministers form PPPP.
