Mercedes-Benz plant project: GoP manages to revive $4 billion investment
ARIF RANA
ISLAMABAD (December 26 2007): In a bid to secure $4 billion foreign direct investment, the government has managed to revive Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plant project in Sheikhupura.

President Pervez Musharraf, who has been very keen to see Mercedes-Benz coming to Pakistan with its project offering trucks and other long vehicles’ manufacturing facility for the army and other clients, used diplomatic channel to convey to the management that their investment in Pakistan was fully secure and the government will provide sovereign guarantee also.

The President asked Pakistan’s ambassador in Germany to take up the matter with Mercedes-Benz Group to convince its management to review its decision of walking out of Pakistan regarding its proposed plan to set up a plant in Sheikhupura, Punjab. The sources said the ambassador held a couple of meetings with Mercedes-Benz management to convey the desire of the President of Pakistan.

The sources said in response to Pakistan’s offer, Mercedes-Benz’s Dubai-based partner Coastal Trading Group’s representative Yusaf Najibi visited Pakistan some three weeks back and held separate meetings with President Musharraf and Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro and expressed willingness to revive the project on behalf of the Group.

The officials in Islamabad confirmed on Tuesday that Coastal Trading which is playing a key role in reviving the project has conveyed to government of Pakistan the Mercedes Group’s interest for reviving the project and visiting Islamabad shortly for a commitment in writing.

The officials working with Coastal Group are very much hopeful that the GoP and Mercedes Group will formally sign a memorandum of understanding for the project sometime in January 2008.

Mercedes-Benz Group had entered Pakistan with its Dubai-based business partner - Coastal Group - in 2006 with a plan to set up a manufacturing plant for large vehicles. It also planned to set up parts manufacturing facility in Pakistan and export it to other countries where it has only assembling facilities. But the project was left unfinished and the investors walked out of Pakistan.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

It would be better these mercedes are exported instead of being used locally.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

when the project actully first started they said they will be exporting vehicales worth $5 billion annualy.
thats a massive increase to our export bill

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

Are we sure we have our priorities right? So the army will be the main beneficiary with local mercedez trucks and long haul vehicles, what else is new?

We should be luring people who are willing to invest, to invest in industry that supports the overall economic goals of the country, maybe another steel mill or a refinery, or some investment in chemicals and mining to tap into Balochistan's resources. First increase your power generation, communication, road networks, then think of progressing to the next stage of manufacturing value added goods. In the present scenario, it will be a tough cookie to get this thing working AND be profitable too.

In a country where the slightest of rain shower results in province wide blackouts, having a technologically advanced manufacturing plant seems like a joke.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

dude merc are not idiots that they are throwing in $4 billion dollars here.
there is allready plenty of investment flowing into for oil refinerys, steel mills chemicals and mining into balochistan and north pakistan,

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

This reminds me of the time when there was an oil refinery coming near Karachi by the UAE, the mush bushies were celeberating like it was some sort of eid, without even reading the articles, and realizing the fact that the rest of the developed and developing world is getting rid of oil refineries and our two bit crooked government (probably benefitting out of kickbacks) decided to let this one company set it up. They didnt even realize that the refinery doesnt cost jack, the oil will just come, get refined and leave, with massive environmental hazards.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

Mashallah Mush is doing great job for Pakistan.

Long live Musharraf Long live Pakistan

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

Mashallah.....Musharraf has worked so much to get Pakistan out of miseries of yesterday.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

Alhamdulilallah. This is excellent news for Pakistan. It once again goes to show that doing business in and with Pakistan has never been easier, thanks to President Musharaf and his govt. Long may it continue.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

I wonder what will be the cost of such vehicles. Definitely out of reach from majority of population. More over where are the roads, on which these vehicles will run? Karachi is already over poluted and traffic jams are the order of the day. Instead of spending this huge capital on making Mercedes, is it not better to invest on sub-ways, roads in big cities like Karach and Lahore or making new highways?

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

first and foremost mercedes benz is a fantastic manufacturer, absolutely brilliant. they are known for their cars but its their commercial vehicles that they rule the planet on. their cars may be for high end market and their commercials are not cheap either but definately value for money. big business will love them. this is great news and even if they are coming to supply the army primarily. the barrier to investment in pakistan is breaking. personally i dont credit musharraf for this, the rest of asia is already booming

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

what is wrong with you.
do you always think illogically.
firstly this plant will bring $5 billion per year exports to pakistan, which is a huge amount, nearly quarter of our total exports. secondly its not about who will be able to afford it or not, look at the economical benefits its bringing, its not just about rich buying cars its also about job creation and many other benefits.
and lastly why the hell will mercedez invest money into building subways, roads and highways, dude please think abit more logically next time, mercedez are car manufacters not a charity that goes around and start making subways and roads for poor countrys.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

Good news indeed. This should lead to thousands of new jobs being created for Pakistani’s, once this is completed and up and running.

Re: Presidant Musharraf brings back Mercedes-Benz plant project of $4 billion

Mashallah, God bless President Musharraf. I read a report last year "mercs are hoping for half million local sales". Next target should be merc design and research in Pakistan.
