I am pregnant and I want to deliver in Toronto. I have frequently been travelling to Canada because my family still lives there, so a place to stay is no problem for me.
I wanted to ask you at what month is it safe to travel, and also, if I land in the beginning of my third trimester, will I be able to find a gynaecologist?

you have to live in Canada 5 months out of every 12 month period to qualify for OHIP coverage. keep that in mind also...i assume you are a canadian citizen...right?
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
Where do you live abroad? Unless you're in Pakistan you're better off delivering your baby where you live.
You know I inquired about prenatal care in Canada and was shocked to discover how inadequate it is! I was comparing it to the U.S. prenatal care. The family physician informed me that a OB/GYN will see you after 26-30 weeks and till then you have to follow up with your family physician!! I am not sure how the family physicians are in the city of Toronto but in Mississauga, they are not exactly the most knowledgeable about prenatal care. I won't be very comfortable getting prenatal care from a family physician as opposed to a proper OB/GYN.
Maybe Toronto is different but Mississauga has a severe shortage of OB/GYN doctors and Canadian healthcare has always disappointed me. It's not really 'free'. It costs us a huge amount of taxes every year!

Also, it will be very hard to find a doctor if you come in your third trimester since these doctors are booked 5-6 months in advance! The only way you can get in is if your family doctor puts in an expedited request. Your best bet is to make the appointment now and by the time you get your appointment, you will already be in your 3rd trimester.
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
Listen miss know it alll who thinks I'm ripping you tax payees off of your money, stop being judgmental. I report my income to the Canadian government and pay my taxes every year, so unless you have something useful to say, kindly shut up.
As for the rest of you, thanks so much for your help! I live in Pakistan because my husband has a good job here and has no interest in starting a new career in Canada. I spent only 3 months in Canada last year but was still able to use my ohip card when I came to Toronto. I never heard about this 5 month rule?!
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
Eligibility
Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). Generally, to be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; and
be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; and
be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; and
make your primary place of residence in Ontario.
OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period.

...I spent only 3 months in Canada last year but was still able to use my ohip card when I came to Toronto. I never heard about this 5 month rule?!
**when did you get ur OHIP card renewed last time? when you do this time, you will be asked if you stayed out of the country for more than 7 months...if you answer yes, they will NOT cover you for the next 3 months which is the residency requirement to qualify for OHIP coverage. you may have to show ur passport to prove that you did NOT live overseas.
my bro's parent-in-laws lived in Canada all their lives but after retirement they moved back to India. now, they have to come to Canada and live hear for 5 months every year to qualify for OHIP coverage. It used to be 8 months before for 'snow-birds'.
besides, just for curiosity sake, why would you wanna have a baby in Canada? as far as baby's citizenship is concerend, if one of the parents of the foreign born baby is a canadian citizen, the baby will get the citizenship automatically. i asked u if you are a canadian citizen to which u chose not to reply...anyways.

Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
saratem good luck girl...this is eactly why I am tryingéhoping not to get pregnant while I am abroad. One thing is for sure if you end up in canada and deliver there, you will not be denied medical care for sure, you might get billed for it if you didn`t meet the eligibility criteria.
I am thinking if I end up in your situation I will so atleats 2-3 motnhs in advance, since I won`t be staying with any family members(because thats how we prefer it) I will get a short term rental close to my moms so that my parents can come and visit or stay over without any problem.
Good luck, please do write back once you deliver your baby safely inshallah, and share your experience regarding OHIP-gyny etc...
I delivered my first child in north york general, had a terrible exp, almost died there, horrible gyny...if you are in toronto I would suggest mount saini, or st. micheals in downtown or in mississauga go for credit valley..Good luck.
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
Woman.... Ure gonna get way better care in a pvt hospital in pak than u will n canada. Ya they may not be the nicest sugar tongued nurses and drs ... But man post natal care is still better... Ive had friends deliver at agha khan and they swear it was amazing. (these girls all lived abroad before making the switch to the homeland).
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
^ what she said...I dunno how things work in Canada but in the US, if one parent is a US citizen, the baby born abroad is automatically eligible for the US citizenship so it's not an issue.. you can find better care at private hospitals in Pakistan than here!!
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
I dont think she is doing it for the medical care, but for the fact that she wants her child to have Canadian citizenship. If you are not able to go through with your plan, you can always move to canada later and apply for your child's citizen from inside Canada- being your child, he will be aloowed to come in.
That said, your family immigrated to Canada, so you got your citizenship at the same time as your parents by naturalization? If thats the case, then your child should be able to be citizen by birth saratem... now, if your child has a kid outside Canada while he was also born outside Canada, then that child (your grandchild) may not be able to have canadian citizenship
Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
I am a Canadian citizen but not by birth. My family migrated to Canada. That law only applies to canadians who were born in Canada.
*NO...all citizens are equal in status no matter how you got ur citizenship...by birth or by naturalization. if one of the parent is a Canadian citizen, the child born overseas automatically gets Canadian Citizenship.

Re: Pregnant Canadian living abroad wants to give birth in Canada
I agree, we know so many kids born to canadian parents living in other countries, and parents in some cases were not born in canada, the kids get ca ciitzenship automatically. If I were in your place, neo-post natal care would be the only concern...
