Pregnancy & Umrah/Hajj

So i have had this dream that inshallah this year when i do fall pregnant - i would like to go on Umrah with hubby. I want our baby to inshallah hear the beautiful azaans and introduce him/her to the sounds and the atmosphere - its gonna be beautiful inshallah as its gonna be my first time too. But me and hubz been thinking is it really a good idea?

Is it safe? Will i be able to cope? Will be able to do the tawaaf? If i fall pregnant by (inshallah) end of August, when would be the best time to go this year or beginning of next year?

What about injections ie meningitis? Should i have the jab now? Will it still be effective for later on this year?

Your views and advice would be very much appreciated esp from mums and dads who went on this beautiful journey.

Re: Pregnancy & Umrah/Hajj

Best wishes to you SE!! It is safe to travel in early pregnancy. Not so much safe later on (actually I think they dont like to seat air-travellers who are far along). I really have no idea about the innoculations but you are right to be concerned about them....go see your doc to find out for sure.

I have to say, early pregnancy (first trimester) is tough. I thankfully never had nausea or vomiting although its very common. What I DID have was extreme fatigue which is also very common. The slightest task would exhaust me and I never felt well-rested. So you MAY be limited in how much you see and do if you take this special trip during early pregnancy. Just be practical in your choice of activities and leisure time and all will (inshallah) go very well. And if it isnt possible to go at this time, it will be a time when your little is already born to the world and able to see and hear on his or her own.

Anyway, best thing to do is see your doc and explain your plans, plan your innoculations accordingly and take things from there. Good luck!

Re: Pregnancy & Umrah/Hajj

How exciting, thats such a beautiful idea!

Umrah doesnt take very long perform. The actual rites of Umrah take about 1- 2hrs, depending on how fast/slow you are and what the crowd is like. So I dont think it would be too difficult for you, as long as your doctor says it is safe for you to travel and you are in good health and strengh, and are not high-risk pregnancy, God forbid

If the first floor of the haram is too crowded you can go up to the second floor, it will probably be very light here, plus it will be shaded mostly so you will have an easier time. If it is too much for you, you can sit in a wheel chair and your husband can push you for both the tawaf and the saee

I think the best time for you to go for Umrah would be in your second trimester. Although I have never been pregnant (yet! make dua!) from all my friends and relatives, I have seen this is the time when they have the most energy. First trimester your body is still adjusting and you will probably be too tired and last trimester you should avoid as well

I think Hajj season will be like end of December this year. So maybe November would be good? After January would probably be getting too late for you

About meningitis shots, I think its good for 3 years? I went for Umrah over a year after I did Hajj and I did not need to get vacinated again. Check with a nurse or doctor to confirm. So your best bet would be to get the vaccine before you get pregnant

Just be very very careful with food and stuff there, people get sick very easily so dont take any chances with questionable meat, unwashed fruits and veggies, water, ice, avoid crowds etc. You can wear a surgical mask to filter the air and protect from germs etc

Bathrooms tend to be very gross down there, so that might be difficult to bear with. If possible, fly from Makkah to Madinah instead of taking a bus

Hope this helps!

Thanks alot Mama - i am really looking forward to my pregnancy inshallah (cant wait to be pregnant) - even tho i have no clue what it will feel like to carry a baby incl all the pain and risks etc - at the end of the day, there will be a beautiful baby that we would have created.

We are still thinking about the idea at the moment! Yes, you are right, i am gonna go and see the doc and discuss this with her!

Thanks Midnights - very informative!

1st trimester involves much fatigue/headache and other things...ur body is adjusting..hormonal changes and all that stuff..but alhamd. i didnt feel anything like this..but its better to avoid travelling in the first trimester...2nd trimester is a good idea...u can go during that phase...tawaf and saee won't bother u.if it does use wheel chair....i went in my first trimester and 2nd trimester as well..and mashallah everything was ok..even went for nafli tawaf in my 8th month...read nafals and came back home...

about injections..make sure u get each and everyone bcz here in umrah and hajj season...there is sort of epidemic...sore throat, flu and cold, temperature etc...so make sure abt ur injections...also dont travel after 7th month by air...its risky at that stage..

Re: Pregnancy & Umrah/Hajj

awww, mA...thats a wonderful idea sunset_eyes :).

Re: Pregnancy & Umrah/Hajj

please consult yr doctor in this regard and ask for info about flu shots ,cholera , tetanus & rubella vaccines.
to be honest no on could tell u how safe or risky it's gonna be if u get pregnant & travel in the meantime , as everyone's preganancy and body reacts differently ( everyone has diff body wt, BMI & activity level ), so u can't relate that with someone else's experience , not even b/w yr own 2 pregnancies...... good luck

Wow mashallah - congratulations!

Thank you.

Thanks hsap!

I think the bottom line is that i will consult the doc and enquire about the tetnus as well as i remember getting it about 10yrs ago - hmmm...time to update my tetnus!

Thank you everyone!
