Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

Hi all,
I’ve heard this myth quite a bit and was wondering if there is any truth to it? We’re trying to get pregnant and will be doing IVF most likely. We’re also trying to switch apts because we figure well need more space if we conceive iA. We’re looking at one apt on the 3rd flood. Everyone excluding my husband are like don’t get it because it’s too much walking. I don’t know if I should listen to them or just ignore them.

Does anyone anything related to this?

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

I don't think it's much to do with walking (unless walking that much is totally new to u), it's more that there is a higher risk of tripping and falling, causing injury to you or the baby. Pregnancy brings with it sudden weight gain and your center of balance can be off... that's why it's better not to be climbing up and down stairs all day cos u could possibly injure urself and/or the baby. Also, generally doctors do advise not to do strenuous or 'new' exercises when you get pregnant... idk if going up and down stairs counts as strenuous but still...

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

Walking is actually healthy for the body in this state. Only if you are not used to it, you can stop thinking about it. For example if you run, then running during this period will help you to maintain your health, but not more than 20 minutes.

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

Since you're going through IVF and your husband is the one saying it's too much walking (although I have no idea why he/anyone else thinks this).....I think it would be best for you to simply ask your OB/GYN this question. If OB/GYN says that it's not too much walking and in fact, you should continue to say active during pregnancy, then your husband and no one else can say anything against that. :)

And for it's worth, OBs generally advice pregnant women to exercise and stay active throughout pregnancy. This makes delivery/recovery easier later on. Unless you have specific health risks and have been advised your OB to limit you physical activity including walking OR have been put on bed rest.........I've never heard of any pregnant woman limiting the amount of "walking".

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

I don't think there is an issue with pregnancy well not with mine. But after baby I have found going up and down to my apartment to be a pain esp with car seat, stroller etc. Will you be there long term?

Also now with a toddler it is even more of a hassle. We are looking to move precisely for this reason.

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

Also we are only on the first floor, I dread to think if we were any higher without a lift

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

I guess where my husband is coming from is that since we're most likely doing IVF do I necessarily want to go up and down 3-4 flights of stairs once I've had a procedure done (retrieval or transfer). We're currently on the third floor right now of our building and its a really big pain bringing laundry up and down the flights of stairs as well groceries. I agree with @Hmmna that lugging car seats, strollers is going to be just the same work.
@Paheli00-I'll talk to my doctor tomorrow but most likely he'll say it will be my personal choice.

I guess we'll keep looking and if we don't find anything else, just consider this one if is still there.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! :-)

Re: Pregnancy/trying to get pregnant and climbing stairs

It's not a concept here in the west, but the amount if women in pakistan that stay confined to their beds during pregnancy is unbelievable, you would think its an illness.

But in all seriousness, the docs here say to continue any activities that you normally do but don't start anything new. I used to carry my 2 year old up the stairs when I was heavily pregnant and it didn't harm me as I was used to doing it.

I wouldn't be so worried about the pregnancy part of walking up the stairs but more of the practicalities of it such as carrying shopping and inshallah in the future with the baby in a car seat or with a stroller. So think ahead and avoid if you can as 3 floors is quite high esp without a lift.
