Preferential treatment of Shoaib continues to embarrass PCB..

Shoaib up to his old habbits…

KARACHI: “Discipline” is the key word in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ranks today following the World Cup debacle but, apparently, those running the cricket affairs practically still have to learn their lessons.

The Board Chairman Lt. General Tauqir Zia, in fact, said here categorically that there would be no compromise on discipline with any player no matter who that person is. Then it is rather surprising to learn that till three days back Shoaib Akhtar was allowed to stay independently at a five star hotel in Lahore whereas the other players in the Pakistan training camp were put up at the three star Sunfort Hotel.

“The News” has learnt that Shoaib, in fact, got special permission from the Board and checked into the Hotel Avari around 16th April when the selectors started the process of trial matches and the Board had put up the outstation players at another three star hotel.

Shoaib, however, was allowed to stay separately on his own expenses. Sources in the board say that even after the selectors announced the camp trainees and the training camp began Shoaib continued to stay at the Avari and it was only after captain Rashid Latif reached Lahore and inquired about his whereabouts that matters took another turn.

The source said that Rashid had taken an immediate stand as to why Shoaib was staying separately when all the other players were in the same hotel including himself and the team management.

“Yet it was after two days reminders from Rashid that Shoaib finally checked into the team hotel,” a source said.

Interestingly, sources say that Shoaib also had to check into the team hotel after an incident at the Avari involving him and a foreign national which didn’t please the Board at all when it was reported to them.

A source, who is Karachi-based and was staying at the hotel the same day the incident took place, confided that the Pakistan fast bowler and his foreign national “friend” had been pulled up by the hotel management when some guests complained off their “unruly” behaviour.

The matter was than also brought to the notice of the Board whose Chairman is said to be very unhappy with the situation and chances are the disciplinary committee of the Board might convene to discuss this matter.

The point is what discipline is the Board hoping to implement when it itself continues to give preferential treatment to Shoaib Akhtar.

The simple question being why was he allowed to stay independently at another hotel even at his own expenses when all the other players were put up by the Board at another hotel?

Nothing new. Zia is a hypocritical bastid

disgusting to say the least

I think the culprit here is Shoaib not the newspaper.

Its all about publicity, when people see something spicy on newspaper, they will buy their publications. Though Jang is one of the respected new sources in the country, they will still go to any extent.

I remember last year, there was a new article published in Dawn, when Pakistan participated in ICC Champions Trophy, that they had some Sri Lankan prostitutes in their rooms.
Similiar news came out before WC 03, when senior guys like Wasim and Waqar had some girlfriends in their hotel rooms.

An indisciplined Shoaib Akhtar has no place in Pak team

KARACHI: Lt. General Tauqir Zia is today like a man who has burnt all his boats and has nothing more to lose. After the utter disappointment of the World Cup, it was apparent here on Saturday that Tauqir has now adopted a no-holds barred attitude towards nearly every cricketing issue.

Appearing at the Jang Forum along with chief selector Aamer Sohail, he minced no words while talking about the future of controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar.

"Let me make this clear; if Shoaib does not improve his behavior and general discipline he has no place in the team. His cricket is finished," Tauqir said when asked about his obvious pampering off Shoaib and his future in the team.

"Yes. I did a lot for him and invested a lot of money on him because we all thought he was a genuine match-winner. We thought he would deliver in the World Cup and honestly speaking we never had prepared any back-up bowlers then, so we depended heavily on him."

"But he let me and the nation down badly and all that pampering and extra care is over. Although for the record we have always taken care of our players and sent them abroad for medical treatment, Shoaib is no different. But yes, I did at times override the team management and overlooked his indiscipline," Tauqir admitted.

"But all that is now over. My message to Shoaib is whatever the selectors might think or plan. But in my book if he can't improve his attitude and become more focussed on cricket his cricket career is over," he added.

"Even now I know what he is up to and where he was last night after 10.00 pm. If he is not willing to focus and concentrate on his cricket and improve his behaviour I am afraid there is no place for him in the team."

Shoaib, who became the undisputed fastest bowler of the world in the recent World Cup in South Africa when he broke the 100 mph speed barrier against England, was dropped from the Sharjah tournament last month after being reported for irresponsible behavior and indiscipline.

The selectors recalled him to the training camp set up for the Sri Lanka tour from which the final squad would be announced next week.

Tauqir however insisted that after the let down of the World Cup there was no place in the team for any player not willing to give 100 per cent commitment and adhering to strict discipline.

"No player is indispensable whoever it might be. If he can't play for the pride of his country he will not be selected."

The PCB chief also stressed that the Board was now on the path to rebuilding a new team and the senior players dropped after the World Cup would have to work very hard to make a comeback.

About Shoaib Tauqir said he had not even seen him once since the World Cup that is how disappointed he was in him.

Aamer Sohail however earlier said that Shoaib was showing more commitment and a desire to focus on cricket in the training camp and if he improved his overall performance he could make a comeback.

"He is still a good bowler with a few years left in him. If he just focuses on cricket than we will consider him. He is working hard in the camp."
