I have a job offer by EBS for summer internship, i have accepted it. The problem is i have an assesment centre with E&Y on tuesday for summer internship in taxation. I have 3 options.
Tell them i already have a job offer so i cant come.
Go to the assesment centre (my first one) and IF ( big if ) i get a job offer refuse it.
Go to the assesment centre and IF i get a job offer accept it and tell EBS to get lost.
The thing is i want to apply to the big 4 accounting firms for graduate job so i dont want to reject E&Y after they offer me a job, if its going to look bad next year when i apply.
The job in EBS is going to be very wide ranging from the dirty work to financial accounting, corporate tax and management accounting. Those of you who dont know what EBS does it was created by majour investment banks to compete against Reuters, which it has done very successfully. It provides intra platform trading solution to banks and private clients for forex and metals. Its situated in the london stock exchange.
Personally i want to go for EBS as its such a cool job and diverse, though the pay is worse than minimum wage :o but at the same time i dont want my chances for a job offer be diminished next year with the big 4.
My career aspirations are to get CA in audit then go into finance through the back door, perhaps investment banking.
Sincerest of apologies. Help much appreciated.
PS wow i have never writen a post so long and so structured :o .ya allah khair
You gotta do what you gotta do… if you’re planning more long-term, then your choice is pretty obvious - just go for the assessment at E&Y and hope for the best. Treat the current offer as a backup, and yes, you’ll need to say no to them after you’ve already accepted their offer which is gonna be rough. They won’t be happy but you gotta do what you gotta do.
I had done the same thing with my first job offer out of undergrad - hehe, the employer told me they’ve blacklisted me :o for future offers since I accepted and later rejected their offer. In the end, I dint really care - and like they say… jo hota hai ussi mey behtri hoti hai
UT : my reasoning for not wanting for E&Y is that i am going to be working in an accounting firm anyway so EBS woudl offer me something different. sigh this is hard or might be :D .
You're getting badly screwed. You didn't go to LSE to make that little money.
But then again, a summer internship is in order to get experience in order to get a better job in future. I'd say go for the intership that's been offered rather than wait for one that you may or may not get in future.
