Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

I hate the term pre-med, you’d certainly expect a lot more doctors for the number of “pre-meds” out there. Don’t even get me started on those who say their major is pre-med… :smack:

In Paki culture, doctor kids give parents bragging rights, which aren’t just limited to rishtas. It’s really sad how our society has elevated the status of doctors to something out of this world and the behavior of doctors reflects that too.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

So there is a doc-damad syndrome, not just a doc-bahu syndrome.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

There’s doctor beta, doctor beti, doctor bahu, doctor damad syndromes…what’s next? Doctor grandchildren syndrome?

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

OK. So on average whats a specialists annual salary in Canada then?

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Oh come on don’t blame or put down doctors–blame our culture for not giving equal status to other noble and honorable careers. Saving a person’s life or taking care of them in their time of need should be celebrated whether it’s a doctor, nurse, physician assitant, EMT, fireman, police officer, social workers, etc. Teachers should also get more recognition, education is empowerment.

Politicians, actors/actresses, singers, sports players are the ones who have out of the world status and it can be argued they are not deserving of such pay and status.

Now yes doctors or anyone else for that matter who are full of themselves or think they are G-ds gift to society and are better than others because of their pay check, I’ll happily join you in putting them down. But this too is a cultural thing–us Pakistanis are notorious for being materialistic, elitist and superficial, especially the doctors that come straight from Pakistan and are taking advantage of the system here. Huge pet peeve of mine. Our culture values a persons house, car their driving, their salary, the connections they have, and other superificial things, etc. People when you have money stay grounded!

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Blame our very backward minded and materialistic culture..not doctors

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

are there still lots of IMGs coming to USA and getting residencies?

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Yes a lot

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

IMGs are coming but its becoming increasingly difficult to get residency for them, and it will become more difficult from now on after ACGME and AOA merger

OK. So on average whats a specialists annual salary in Canada then?

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

There are way too many spots and in programs and in locations that no US student wants regardless if they are MD or DOs (DOs have their own residency spots as well)..there will always be a need for IMGs..all they need to do is do well on USMLE which isn’t as difficult to do now a days esp with the time they have to study. Yes if they don’t do well or fail then yeah they don’t stand a chance for a residency these days. They may also have to apply a 2nd time if they don’t get it the 1st time, but all IMGs I know have secured residency and they’re not the smartest or most studious people.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Yeah, there’s people like that. Some of these people DO make it in to medical school and they either don’t survive or just turn out more bitter and money-hungry by the end of it. I don’t think it’s a “title” thing for the guys’ themselves – it’s definitely family. Most of the guys here are from “legacy families” where they have every single member of their family practicing medicine. So the pressure is on.

It’s the same for some girls though. I had a friend here (who got dismissed for failing) that was here because her dad (who is a physician) would ONLY pay for higher education if it was med school. If they wanted to be lawyers/engineers, tough luck – they’re paying their own way through school. Needless to say, all 5 of them are in med school (and 2 of them are really struggling, with 1 of them just being dismissed).

I’ve heard of this too. Happened to some cousins. Got into school, found men, and then proceeded to drop out. there’s a few girls trying those same antics here too but I don’t think that works as well in the States because I haven’t met TOO many dr guys that want girls that sit at home and do nothing.

Yep. There’s this epidemic everywhere. There’s a LOT of single girls in our community (all with bachelors degrees…nothing wrong with that!) that aren’t getting married because their parents ONLY want a dr SIL. Which is problematic because the number of guy med students we have in the community is a big ol’ zero. So they’re just sitting around rejecting rishtas. One aunty (when my mom announced my engagement) upon finding out that my fiance is a dr went turned to her daughter/daughter’s friend and said " SoConfused found a doctor, now you have to find one too"…never mind the fact that fiance and I GO TO SCHOOL TOGETHER and I’m in medical school too lol. frustrating. :smack:

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Do people get kicked out during residency ?

Is it true because this is the first time I heard something like that.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Back in school I was so scared of Biology I opted not to study it from 8th grade onward. I took Advanced Mathematics. Anything to get me out of memorizing all that. My sister wasn’t that lucky. She wasn’t too good at mathematics, so she got forced into it.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Yes. 6 people in my intern year were kicked out alone.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Yeah it happens but still very difficult unless at a very malignant program. And usually theyll give you the option to voluntarily resign because that allows you to find another residency program as opposed to getting kicked out which would be a huge red flag. Usually it’s a trend in professional issues (showing up late to work, not showing up at all, not answering pages, showing attitude to attending, not putting in medical orders, etc). Even substance abuse (i.e. showing up drunk to hospital or taking a medication from hospital and self injecting) won’t get you fired at most programs as long it didn’t directly impact patient care–you’ll have to take time off at least 1 year to get help, will get referred to the states medical board and go through rehab even if its a 1st time offense and prove that you have learned from your mistakes and are suitable to practice before you get reinstated.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Wow your program must have been very malignant

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

OMG…thanks for letting me know. I thought that once you are in a residency program, getting fired is not an option unless of course one commits a massive blunder.

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

Thanks for the info.

What do you mean when you say " malignant " programs ? Can you please elaborate more…

Re: Pre-Meds and the Rishta Game

There are some residency programs unofficially labelled as “malignant” by residents, these programs are toxic work environments for residents..program directors and attending are not resident advocates and treat residents badly and berate and put them down often publicly. Residents are often over worked (used to work 100+ hrs/week for minimum hourly wage, now it’s 80 hrs/wk for crappy pay) and morale is low. Just not an enjoyable experience nor is it conducive to a learning environment. So basically malignant programs often have malignant program directors and/or chairmen who won’t think twice before they potentially ruin someone’s career. These used to be the norm for most programs in the 1970s-1990s but thankfully they are becoming relatively more rare as changes in work culture and environment and hour restrictions have been made over the past decade.
