Praying while the adhan is on AND Reciting a surah after al-Faatihah in the 3rd/4th..

Assalamo alaykum,

I quite often pray at college or elsewhere while the adhan is on. However, I wasn’t sure if it’s appropriate or not. Found something that answered my question. I thought I’d share, as it could’ve been something of concern for others as well.

Is it true that one must listen to the adhân first before performing prayer?

Normally, the person who calls the prayers (the mu’adhdhin) does so on time. He is not allowed to make the call before the actual time. If he calls to early, his doing so is invalid.

If the mu’adhdhin calls the prayer on time like he is supposed to, the worshipper may pray while hearing the adhân. It is permissible for him to pray since the time for prayer has in fact started.

I learned quite a while ago that it is not necessary to recite a surah after reciting Surah Fatihah in 3rd and 4th rakah in fard salah. I thought I’d share it in case someone’s unfamiliar with the ruling.

Reciting a soorah after al-Faatihah in the third and fourth rak’ah

That which is correct during the prayers which have three and four raka’aat is to recite (Soorah) al-Faatihah and to follow it with a Soorah in the first two rak’ah’s (only). And there is no harm in reciting more than (Soorah) al-Faatihah during the Zhuhr and 'Asr prayers sometimes, but not always. So if he were to read more than (just Soorah) al-Faatihah in (the third and fourth raka’aat of the) Zhuhr and 'Asr (prayers), then there is no harm in this, whilst it is preferred to mostly not read anything after (Soorah) al-Faatihah after the first tashahhud (i.e in the third and fourth raka’aat).

WEll i knew bout the adhan thing
but about reciting surahs..i thought we r not suppose to recite NE surah after Surah Fatiha in Fard namaz in 3 and 4 rakah..but in sunnah and nafil..i thought we do have to recite surah even in 3 and 4 rakahs

Sadiyah, what about recitation of Surahs in the Sunnah prayers? I asked someone long time ago and I believe they said that in Sunnah prayers, we must recite Ayahs after the Fatiha in every Rakah...

Is this true? Or like the Fard prayers we should just recite Ayahs in the first two Rakahs and leave the 3rd and 4th empty, i.e. nothing after Surah Fatiha...

Zainab, thanks for bringing it up.

Asked a friend and was confirmed that it's for fard salah only (most likely); ie. don't necessarily have to recite any surah after surah fatihah after the first two rakahs in fard salah.
