Praying while sitting

Asalamo Alaikum,

Is it acceptable to pray while sitting? Or is sajood required?

The reason I ask, because when I’m at work, I don’t always have a chance to find an empty conference room to pray in… So I go to my car and pray while sitting on the passenger side.

If anyone could shed some light on this, it’d me much appreciated!

Thanks in advance :hat:

Praying while sitting

My nani, barri Khala, Ammi (who had osteoarthritis and hip replacement surgery) all pray(ed) while sitting in a chair, because they couldn't physically do sajood. I believe it's acceptable, I've never heard otherwise.

I'm also interested to learn the rulings on this.

If I know my rulings correctly, hanafi madhab does not allow for sitting prayers of fard unless your life or health is at risk. For any other situation, if you have no option but to sit and pray, then do so, but come back home and repeat it (according to hanafi).

Re: Praying while sitting

Pretty much what TLK said. I'd say that most (if not all) people I've talked to about this and who will pray sitting in the car or something don't have a valid excuse to do so (i.e. no real risk to health, safety etc.) and are just more shy about people looking at them. So that would not be a good enough reason to do it. From my own experience, I'd say that it's almost always possible to find a quiet corner somewhere and pray there. So sujood, qiyam and the rest of the rukn are required unless there is a strong reason to omit them.

What khattichic has described is something different, people who are older and having some physical conditions that wouldn't allow them to do the full rukn.

Re: Praying while sitting

Peace MM,

What TLK Bhai said is correct. According to Fiqa Hanafi and also Fiqa Shafi'i, praying while standing is obligatory unless a person is that much sick that he/she can't stand and offer prayers. Please see below hadith:

*Book 'Shortening the Prayers (At-Taqseer)' of Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 218. *

Narrated 'Imran bin Husain: had piles, so I asked the Prophet about the prayer. He said, "Pray while standing and if you can't, pray while sitting and if you cannot do even that, then pray Lying on your side."

As for your concern, you'll not find space but you have to make space for praying.

Almighty Allah knows best.

Re: Praying while sitting

I emailed a Mufti, but I guess he's got some personal issues going on because he hasn't replied :(

But In Sha Allah, I'll find someone else! Thanks again!

Re: Praying while sitting

can pregnant women pray in a sitting position??

Re: Praying while sitting

That's a good question!

I would think it would fall into the "health preventing them from standing"... not sure. I've seen pregnant women offer prayer while standing and sitting in a chair. Some start standing and then eventually move to a chair... I assume when they get tired? Not sure.

Re: Praying while sitting

Peace apricot,

I haven't came across a source which states how a pregnant woman can offer her prayers. However, it is mentioned that they may offer obligatory prayers and may leave supererogatory prayers. See below hadith as a references.

*Book 'Fasting (Kitab Al-Siyam)' of Sunan Abu-Dawud Hadith No. 2402: *

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: A man from Banu Abdullah ibn Ka'b brethren of Banu Qushayr (not Anas ibn Malik, the well-known Companion), said: A contingent from the cavalry of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) raided us. I reached (for he said went) to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) who was taking his meals. He said: Sit down, and take some from this meal of ours. I said: I am fasting, he said: Sit down, I shall tell you about prayer and fasting. Allah has remitted half the prayer to a traveller, and fasting to the traveller, the woman who is suckling an infant and the woman who is pregnant, I swear by Allah, he mentioned both (i.e. suckling and pregnant women) or one of them. I was grieved for not taking the food of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him).

Book 'Purity' of Malik's Muwatta, Hadith No 2.29.102 & 2.29.103:

*Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that a pregnant woman who noticed bleeding left off from prayer. *

*Yahya related to me from Malik that he asked Ibn Shihab about a pregnant woman who noticed bleeding. Ibn Shihab replied, "She refrains from prayer." Yahya said that Malik said, "That is what is done in our community."
*

The hadith which I quoted earlier clearly states that if one can't pray standing, he may pray while sitting. A person by him/herself knows better about his/her condition that he/she is able to offer namaz while standing or not. Therefore a pregnant woman knows better whether she can offer namaaz while standing or sitting or lying.

Almighty Allah knows best.

Re: Praying while sitting

I get really bad back pain at times and it hurts alot if i pray while standing when I have it. So I pray while sitting. But only when I'm hurting and it's painful.
