Re: Praying for dead relatives
Yes, dua is a powerful tool, and should be used in praying for those who have left us… here is some reference i found from:
http://www.islamqa.com/index.php?ref=9014&ln=eng&txt=praying%20for%20dead
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
** “And those who came after them say: “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith…” **[al-Hashr 59:10]
It was reported that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: **“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us of the death of the Negus, the king of Ethiopia, on the day that he died, and said, ‘Pray for forgiveness for your brother.’” **
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1236; Muslim, 951)
It was narrated that ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan said: “When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) finished burying someone who had died, he would stand over him and say, ‘Pray for forgiveness for your brother, and ask that he may be made steadfast, for even now he is being questioned.’”
(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3221. An-Nawawi classed the isnaad of this hadeeth as jayyid in al-Majmoo’, 5/292).
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
“The fact that the dead benefit from du’aa’s is indicated by the consensus of the ummah on offering du’aa’ for him during the janaazah (funeral) prayer, hence we know that du’aa’ benefits the deceased… This is supported by many ahaadeeth and is in fact is the whole point of praying for the deceased. The same applies to making du’aa’ for him after the burial, and making du’aa’ for them when visiting their graves.”
(al-Rooh, 118, 119)
Re: Praying for dead relatives
^ JazakAllah Khair sister for a beautiful sharing. I would like to add here that not only praying but also sadaqa can be given on a dead person's behalf so that the dead person may benefit from it, by the grace and mercy of Allah (s.w.t)
‘A’isha said that a person came to the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and said:
My mother died suddenly without having made any will. I think she would have definitely given Sadaqa if she had been able to speak. Would she have a reward if I gave Sadaqa on her behalf? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Hisham with the same chain of transmitters. And in the hadith transmitted by Abu Usama the words are:” She did not make any will,” as it has been reported by Ibn Bishr, but it was not reported by the rest of the narrators.

Re: Praying for dead relatives
Dua is very power tool, a man i directly in contact with the Creator, it can deliver the pardon/upgrade status of the Dead, other than this, Salah- childrens and any other sadaqa jariya did by him/herself (dead person) only will benefit them but same can go other way, means sins can be mutliplied as well.
Re: Praying for dead relatives
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him.''
[Muslim].
Re: Praying for dead relatives
well praying for dead relatives is allowed in sum ways and i believe for ur parents only i think
u can fast for them, offer haj or umrah, give charity and pray for forgiveness and it doesnt mean that u call ppl at ur place and recite quran and stuff its not permisible

Is this in line with the Hadees STP posted?
Re: Praying for dead relatives
well there r other ahadeeth about this matter too.
for example that fasting thing its in a tradition that a sahabi saw a non muslim guy sacrificing 50 camels for his dead father so he asked the prophet wat shud i do so the prophet replied u fast for him.
Re: Praying for dead relatives
^^ i guess, as it is said in the posted hadees that childrens are considered as sadqa jariya... so the good deeds by them ( taught by their parents: directly or indirectly) will benefit them.
Moreover, their is one more hadees saying; Good advice is sadqa jariya.
people may benefit from the advice for long time, this will benefit the dead one till the advice is acted or recited ( quoting him or not).
Now, i have not seen a single ayat of Quran niether a direct hadees saying that dead ones can be benefited other than the scenarios mentioned above.
Now Dua is something else, but i rather try to depend on my amaal to atleast get entitled for the forgiveness and rehma of Allah Subhan o tala then somebody praying for me (which is again i can only wish for but cannot garantee) ... being a Investment Consultant, i would like to have a long term investment ( advices/actions) which may benefit me and increase me Hasana even after my BOOKs are closed.
Now if our parents have passed, we can benefit them by spreading their good words out, by acting on the right guidelines they have provided us, it will surely benefit them lot more, and much longer then a single fast can....
Re: Praying for dead relatives
agree with u totally
but there r sum things that prophet allowed i mean actually told sahabas to do like fasting.
but i think it is only for parents as i mentioned earlier
cuz ofcourse nothing can bebefit u wen ur amaal namaas r closed except sadqa jaariah
and all these quran khaanis and khatams ......from where ppl get these thoughts to do those things?
no offense but still, where?

Quran khaanis and Khatams are practised mostly in our region, i think all thees, Qul, Teesra, bee'waaN, Chalees'waaN... etc are derived from hindus and local indian culture... i exactly don't know th roots of it...
Re: Praying for dead relatives
yeah mostly hinduism this rasme qul is derived from hindu rasmo f "pul" or"phul"
im not sure of the name
and then yes cultures do have influence

Re: Praying for dead relatives
