Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

I am not a practising Muslim (i.e. do not pray five times, do not fast regularly, dont really eat halaal).
Can I offer prayers/fast on behalf of a deceased relative (parent or grandparent) that has some missed fasts due to illness ? What is the Islamic ruling on this? What is your view on this?

Re: Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

^ i dont think u can fast/pray on others' behalf....

u can pay sadaqa on their behalf, do hajj-e-badal (if they really intended to do so and for some reason failed to perform hajj) and u can make duaa for them....

if they missed fasts due to illness, then as Quran says they r exempted from it....
if they never recovered their health to be able to make up for the missed fasts they dont have to do it....

and if u r really bothered, u can give a one time meal to 60 poor people as kaffaara, also as Quran has stated for missed fasts....

Re: Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

Could you cite a source for feeding 60 people as a kaffaara and what exactly is this kaffaara for?

Re: Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

^ if a person breaks fast intentionally, he is required to fast 60 days as kaffarah and if he cannot, he has to feed 60 poor people....

so i suggested that if he really thinks that the deceased needed to make up for the fasts, then since he can no longer fast 60 days, he can go for the other oprion (of feeding 60 poor people)....

the kaffarah is when someone breaks a fast on purpose....

was just trying to give him an equal option....

Re: Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

Wouldn't that equal to the make-up of one fast as opposed to many more?

Re: Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

^ if a person breaks one fast or 3-4, its the same penalty....

the penalty is not to "make up for missed fatings" but to realize the wrong the person has done so he/she wont repeat it next time....

Read Quran paak for that person.

Re: Prayers for Deceased Parents/Grandparents.

Yes, read Quran and make dua for them As Much As you can and give sadqaat. People who are gone from this world took their actions with them. Now all we can do here is to make dua and read Quran Paak for them.
