Prayers and Patience - Two occasions of duwa

I was told that duwas are accepted after Fard Salah. Today, I was looking randomly a book and found following verse of Holy Quran.

Translation: O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
(Ch 2, Verse 153 )

I get my understanding that patience is second key for the acceptance of duwa.

There are two occasions, when duwa could accepted.

  • After Fard Salah
  • Patience

How would you interpret above verse?

Re: Prayers and Patience - Two occasions of duwa

Peace Mahool Bhai,

If we also read (refer to) earlier Verses 45 and 46 of Chapter 2 which says: “Nay, seek (Allah’s) help with patient perseverance and prayer: It is indeed hard, except to those who bring a lowly spirit,- Who bear in mind the certainty that they are to meet their Lord, and that they are to return to Him”, then we’ll came to know that the Arabic word “Sabr [patient]” implies many shades of meaning, which it is impossible to comprehend in one English word. It implies:

(1) Patience in the sense of being thorough, not hasty;
(2) Patient perseverance, constancy, steadfastness, firmness of purpose;
(3) Systematic as opposed to spasmodic or chance action;
(4) A cheerful attitude of resignation and understanding in sorrow, defeat, or suffering as opposed to murmuring or rebellion, but saved from mere passivity of listlessness by the element of constancy or steadfastness.

Furthermore an additional meaning implied in sabr is self-restraint. Haqqani defines it in his Tafsir as following Reason and restraining Fear, Anger and Desire. Muqatil bin Hayan said that this verse means “utilize patience and the obligatory prayer in seeking the hereafter. As for 'patience (here), they say that it means fasting”. Al-Qurtubi and other scholars commented, “this is why Ramadhan is called the month of patience”, as it is mentioned in the hadith literature. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Umar bin Al-Khattab said, “there are two types of patience: (1) good patience when the disaster strikes, and (2) a better patience while avoiding the prohibitions of Almighty Allah.”

So, what can be a higher reward for patience, perseverance, self-restraint and constancy than that Almighty Allah should be with us? For this promise opens the door to every kind of spiritual well-being.

Now coming to part of the acceptance of dua, it is mentioned in various hadiths that a dua made between the adhaan and aqama will not be rejected. There are be many forms for making dua like in congregation fard namaaz and while reading two rakat ‘Salaath-e-Hajat’ etc., and acceptance of all duas is by the will of Almighty Allah. Almighty Allah stated that the best tools to help ease the effects of the afflictions are patience and prayer.

a) If he is tested with a bounty, he is grateful for it and this is better for him;
b) and if he is afflicted with a hardship, he is patient with it and this is better for him.

Almighty Allah knows best.

Re: Prayers and Patience - Two occasions of duwa

Peace @mahool

It is no accident that patience appears before Salat in these verses. Also one needs to meditate on whether there is a necessary connection in the sense of causative patience and/or salat leading to acceptance of du’a. Rather I feel this is a prescription for the adab of du’a. We need to understand that we have to learn to not seek help to obtain what we desire … but rather we need to learn to seek help in desiring what Allah (SWT) wants us to obtain.

It is wrong to entertain the idea that du’a is done and then Allah (SWT) accepts it, because that thought violates the idea that Allah (SWT) Knows all things from the cradle of creation - His Divine Word - Be - is still manifest. He Knows what He will bestow to us and He Knows what du’as we ask before we ask them. We believe He Created us in Compassion and Mercy and we need to trust that His ordainment for us is better than what we can possibly desire for ourselves. Personal desires are myopic - they are based on pretentions and/or short sighted plans - how can they compare to the Divine Wisdom?

Being patient hence precedes everything … It is about being patient with the Decree of Allah (SWT). Then it is about servitude - that when our desires are quelled then we establish prayer in testimony of our slave status with our Lord. The inner and outer condition will hopefully teach us to seek out - what should be sought. We can seek out khair in Akhira, we can seek out being with Our Lord and we can seek out being given the tawfiq to accept the Decree of Allah (SWT) and embracing it. If Allah (SWT) gives to us we accept it and if He does not we accept that Wisdom too.

Why is that when a Muttaqi or Wali-ullah asks from Allah (SWT) anything and it is granted that it makes him or her happy?

It is not because Allah (SWT) granted what they desired … but because Allah (SWT) gave tawfiq to them to ask in coincidence what Allah (SWT) had already ordained for them.

So why are they happy when their du’as are not granted?

This is because they see that as an opportunity to continue asking and being kept at the doorstep - near Allah (SWT) - whose Name occupies their thoughts. This leads to sakina and that leads to more sabr …

So it makes more wise sense that du’a does not lead from these things but works with patience and salat in a continuous cycle of increasing taqwa and knowledge of Allah (SWT).

Assalamualaikum

Already explained by Br. LKK & Br. psyah

Just adding this
There are many other occasions where dua is accepted, few are
At the time of tahajjud
When its raining
Between azaan & iqamaah
when breaking fast
When travelling

Allah knows best this ayah is like a medicine at the time of hardship seriously and also the ayah which is just after one verse of this ayah. Wallahi these two things patience and salah are really a gift from Allah subhan wa ta’alla. And we should understand it and act upon it..not only in times of hardship also at the time of ease. Be patient and perform the duties of Allah subhan wa ta’alla and indeed prayer stops you from doing wrong thing.
May Allah grant us steadfastness in deen ameen

Re: Prayers and Patience - Two occasions of duwa

Seek help [forgiveness] in Prayer [Salah] and Patience [Abstention]

Fasting is also patience. The help of patience is like the blessings of Fasting, and the blessed Month of Ramazan.

This is just my opinion, and Quran Pak ayats can have multiple meanings

There are many blessed times when Dua is accepted, after Fard Salah is one of them. Sometimes you connect to a certain manner and route to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. And our hearts settle on a plan of why this time and this manner is better for us to approach Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala
