Mumbai: BJP General Secretary Pramod Mahajan died in Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital on Wednesday.
Mahajan died at 1610 hrs (IST) of several complications like respiratory system failure and extensive trauma, Dr Pramod Lele of Hinduja Hospital announced.
Mahajan is survived by his wife Rekha, son Rahul and daughter Poonam.
Mahajan, who was shot at by his younger brother Pravin Mahajan in Mumbai on April 22, had been on life support system for the past 12 days.
Earlier on Wednesday, doctors had announced that Mahajan had suffering from multiple-organ failure and was not responding to any treatment.
The senior BJP leader also underwent three operations within the first seven days and had developed an Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome on Monday.
In a last-ditch effort, the doctors at Hinduja hospital had conducted a bronchoscopy on the 56-year-old leader earlier on Tuesday to identify the cause of his airway problems.
All vital organs of Mahajan were on artificial support system since day one.
He was constantly on ventilator and dialysis support.
The three bullets were still lodged in Mahajan’s organs and seemed to have caused extensive damage to his vital organs.
Mahajan was shot at by his younger brother Pravin at his residence in Mumbai at around 0800 hours (IST) on April 22.
Pravin shot at Mahajan thrice with his 9 mm Browning revolver at the 14th floor in a posh apartment block in Worli.
Reports said that the two had argued over a property dispute, but Mahajan’s second brother, Prakash, denied this saying there was no dispute as there was no property.
Pravin, a building contractor, lives in suburban Thane and came to Mahajan’s home in a car. After the incident, he surrendered at the Worli police station and was arrested. Pravin told the police that Mahajan ill-treated and humiliated him.
According to the police, three shots were fired at Mahajan. One missed and two hit Mahajan in the body and chest.
The bullets severed the main vein in Mahajan’s abdomen, shattered the right side of the liver, the top of his pancreas and damaged the small intestine, doctors at Hinduja Hospital said.
It took doctors a major surgery and almost four days to stop bleeding from his liver. But soon Mahajan’s kidneys started malfunctioning from Day Five and he had to be put on dialysis to improve the functioning of his kidneys.
Mahajan’s family flew in an Australian ortho-trauma specialist to Mumbai to support the medical services offered to the BJP leader. There was also a British expert attending on Mahajan from day two.
The news of his demises left BJP shell-shocked. The party flag at its headquarters was lowered at half-mast and garlands were placed on his photograph.
