Pakistan People’s Party has put up an impressive show of power at Kammo Shaheed on the Sindh-Punjab border on Saturday. It was a huge gathering by any measure and a timely warning to all its opponents that the nucleus of the fire is still intact and its voter is still not disillusioned by its 4-year of rule.
With all major political parties of all four provinces being part of its chorus, leaders of the PPP sang at the top of their voices anthom of extending their rule for another 5-year term once the present assignment is over. After 4 years of government, PPP’s confidence for being on the verge of another electoral milestone is understandable. While facts and figures speak volume against the government, PPP continues to be present in all parts of the country.
Zardari, despite being a newcomer in power politics, has introduced new dimensions in our political environment and holds all the triumph cards in his hand for being the true pioneer. He has not only been successfuly navigating through the headwinds himself, he is also imparting crucial techniques to other bigwigs like Altaf Hussein, Chaudhrys and Asfandar on how to enjoy two shows in one ticket. Zardari is an institution of realpolitiking.
Sindh is the power base of PPP (and they have their provincial government in place as well), they should do these kind of shows in other provinces as well. The other day they did a small show in some Punjab town, and the TV was showing women complaining that they had been promised Rs 1000 for attending the jalsa but no one had given that to them yet.
The role of government machinery and funding cannot be ruled out in such cases. But the big picture is more worrisome. Even if the PPP has to bite the dust in other parts of the country, the kind of a ‘coalition of the willing’ — or shall I say ‘the nexus of evil’ Zardari has eracted, they may still be able to compliment each other and come out as winners.
I think if the next elections are free and fair peoples party does not stand a chance but if they try to rig the elections it would have a far graver situation as compared to 1977.
Lets accept that he or his political advisors so claver fighting in lot fronts but still in power. Wana play with a chess game if he know(^ー゜) wrost corrupt but shatir enough too matching with pak.political atmosphere.
In last election PPP got 10.6 million votes. Out of that PPP got ~5 million votes in Punjab and ~ 3.5 million votes in Sindh. So, one can say, the largest vote banks PPP have is in Punjab.
PMLQ got ~8 million votes and out of that ~5.5 million votes were from Punjab.
PMLN got ~6.7 million votes and out of that ~5.2 million votes were from Punjab.
So, one cannot say that PPP is a weak party in Punjab.
As for effect of corruption, mismanagement and nepotism, I believe such things are meaningless in Pakistani election. Actually, many people praise such things and support party that is most corrupt hoping to benefit themselves (though that is their dream as in the end they are the main losers).
Anyhow, as things are, it is doubtful that in near future Pakistan would have a party with 50 percent NA seats and that means coalition government. To have coalition government, a party has to know how to work with others parties. Amongst parties that can get significant seats:
PMLN have no ability to make coalition. Actually, very few if any party would like to work with them, and hence their coming to power is unlikely.
PMLQ can make successful coalition and some parties might even work with them, but they have to get enough seats to get into power so that with help of coalition they can make government. Since they have seen break-up recently, their chances are little to get enough seats to make government even with coalition partners.
That leaves PPP. PPP can get significant NA seats, and since they are best capable of making coalition and most other parties would be willing to work with them, it means, there is good chance that PPP would form next government.
Unfortunately, people of Pakistan are very racist. Sindhis will always vote for PPP despite the ugly 4 years of misery that PPP has caste upon Pakistan. Same is the case with Balochistan…they will always vote for baloch nationalist parties because they believe in racism…pushtuns for ANP in KPK and racist punjabis will always vote for NS in punjab. The racists in sindh and punjab and balochistan and kpk have visions more limited than frogs in a well.
Pakistanis are the biggest racists in the world and all the people who participated in this event of PPP supported zulm against insaaf. I hope that on the judgement day, these people are judged along with Zardaris and Gillanis that they support.
Personally I believe that Pakistanis deserve another dose of PPP for 5 years and am quite certain that they will get it.
Sindh Chief Minister said that this gathering of more than one million warns the chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Mian Nawaz Sharif not to challenge the people of Sindh or of Pakistan because much more people would gather to head for Lahore.
Keh Diya Na, Bas Keh Diya. :snooty: When people eat whatever you spout from your beak, then why do into details? If CM says PPP served people without any discrimination (and the doofuses who were there never asked him a question that when and how they were served), then so be it. Le the will of the public be done!
It is a grave fact Sa1eem. But then this trend leaves the whole exercise of adult franchise meaningless as the concept of reward and punishment based on performance is not actualized by voters. This is the essence of democracy that a performer gets power and a non-performer gets boot. But if the soul is taken out of electoral equation — that the culprit is not punished and a performer is not rewarded — then the whole body of adult franchise becomes paralyzed and we get a dysfunctional system of governance.
Democracy as we have it, is fully exploitable and there isn’t much we can do with it. The decision of the majority is binding on everyone, whether one likes it or not.
While I agree with you totally in principle, you and I know nothing like this will happen. More than 50% of our population fall under the dominion of waderas, jageerdars, and sardars. These poor people don’t have a choice, these poor people don’t even know they have a choice. So obviously they are going to agree with whatever a powerful politician says. Sad state of affairs.
In cities, people may make a decision, the educated ones (and those yearning for a change) will too, but more than half won’t.
