Re: PPP will not boycott elections even if President Musharraf gets re-elected
it will be BB and friends showdown against NS and pals, with some others on the fence and looking for election results to then negotiate the price for forming a coalition with one side or the other. That will be MMA and MQM game.
Re: PPP will not boycott elections even if President Musharraf gets re-elected
so the deal is done I guess, congrats to PPP jiyalas!
Re: PPP will not boycott elections even if President Musharraf gets re-elected
Yup, all out efforts now seem to being made now by the US adminstration for a Musharraf-PPP deal. The American’s are making BB swallow the “bitter” pill of making a deal with Musharraf, which will leave her some of her party and her opposition allies bitterly resentful.

US spurs move for Musharraf-PPP deal
Accelerating efforts aimed at ‘deal’ between President Pervez Musharraf and the ‘liberal political forces’, the Bush administration has decided to send another ‘emissary’ to Islamabad to join Assistant Secretary Richard Boucher. US Deputy Secretary of State, John Negroponte will arrive here on Friday to hold talks with President Musharraf and leaders of PPP as well as PML and other politicians along with Boucher to help form a broad-based government of liberal political forces after next general elections to counter the forces of extremism. Boucher, who will remain in Islamabad till June 17, spent a busy Wednesday in Pakistani capital meeting Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retired) Muhammad Farooq and Foreign Secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan.

very interesting

With high ranking US officials now in Pakistan it does seem interesting indeed.
Re: PPP will not boycott elections even if President Musharraf gets re-elected
I believe that Boucher and Negroponte could be in Pakistan to negotitate the final details of the Musharraf-PPP deal. If this is the case, then there could be an announcement in the next 7-10 days of early general elections i.e. for the first week of September - before the onset of Ramadan (during which elections are not usually held or preferrable). As Musharraf's term as President/COAS does not expire till 16 November, then he will remain as he is for now, and a final decision on the uniform etc would be made under a deal with the new government that comes to power in late September.
This would put the opposition parties on the spot, as these elections would be held under President-General Pervez Musharraf, which some of them especially PML (Nawaz), JI, PTI have been swearing they would not take part in. Of course the PPP has not said that, and neither has the JUI of Fazlur Rehman, which would effectiverly mean that you would have a splineted opposition going into the elections.
Re: PPP will not boycott elections even if President Musharraf gets re-elected
Now Maulana Fazlur Rehman is saying practically the same thing.
No unilateral resignations from assemblies: Fazl
National Assembly Opposition Leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday said the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) would not resign unilaterally from the assemblies if President General Pervez Musharraf seeks re-election from the current assemblies, instead “we want all opposition parties to evolve a joint strategy to this end, because resignations by only one party might not serve the purpose”. In an interview with a private TV channel, Fazl said the MMA had not formally received any talks offer by the government so far. He said the government had not sought any cooperation from the opposition. Answering a uestion whether the government, after taking him and the Pakistan People’s Party into confidence, could dissolve the assemblies in July to pave the way for elections, Maulana said if any such proposal was floated, the opposition parties would work out their joint strategy. He said the MMA had not decided about dialogues with the government, but the talks could only take place when the government developed confidence among the opposition parties. agencies
