PPP not invited to Liaquat Bagh public meeting: PML-N

Secretary general of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has said the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) has not been invited to attend the public meeting of the opposition parties to be held at Liaquat Bagh on August 14. Talking to Dawn after a meeting of the PML-N’s Central Working Committee (CWC) here on Thursday, Mr Jhagra said the public meeting in Rawalpindi on the Independence Day was being arranged from the platform of the newly-formed All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) and as the PPP was not part of this movement, therefore, it could not be invited. Mr Jhagra claimed that at the time of the formation of the APDM in London last month, the PPP leadership had sought some time from the other opposition parties before taking any decision regarding joining of the movement. However, he said, the PPP leaders had not yet given any reply and the APDM leaders were waiting for their decision. He said if the PPP decided to join the APDM before August 14 then the party would definitely be invited to the public meeting. The PML-N leader said they did not require permission from anyone to hold the public meeting. He said they had only informed the administration about their decision and they would hold the public meeting in any case even without permission.

Earlier, briefing mediapersons about the CWC meeting, Mr Jhagra said it had been decided that the APDM would also arrange rallies between different cities as part of the mass mobilisation campaign against the regime. He said the proposal to hold a train march was also under consideration. Mr Jhagra, who is also the secretary general of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD), evaded several questions regarding the fate of the ARD after formation of the APDM and the meeting between President Gen Pervez Musharraf and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto. He, however, said the ARD was still intact. Avoiding any direct attack on the PPP, he said those parties which would hold negotiations with the military dictators could not remain part of the ARD. Similarly, he said, if any party including the PPP violated the Charter of Democracy it would be considered out of the ARD. He said the party had serious objection to the meeting between Gen Musharraf and Ms Bhutto. Mr Jhagra said the rumours about imposition of emergency in the country proved that the rulers were in a state of panic. He said no one could dare impose martial law or emergency in the country after a successful movement for the independence of judiciary. He said the only solution to all the problems was resignation of Gen Pervez Musharraf.

Re: PPP not invited to Aug 14 public meeting: PML-Nawaz

This is high time Sharif brothers come out of this 9 khotay-stars mentality. I'll tell you guys about details in a bit. First let me explain the concept of "Khotay-stars". Khotay means blemished and not donkeys. However the end result still is the same.

Mullahs formed 9-Khotay-star alliance against ZA Bhutto. This alliance was based on hating the government. So the whole premise was negativism with no particular agenda of their own. Yeah some people bought into "price reductions" back to 1970 level. But again whoever believed on such price reduction was a khota (donkey aka dumb) as well. Anyways the alliance fell apart as soon as their common enemy was toppled.

Fast forward to 1999. Sharifs were hounded by the opposition, and economy thanks to nukie explosions went really really south (way below Mexico).

Sharifs knew they could remain in power as long as military is under their thumb. So they tried to kick out Musharraf. Musharraf off course was protected by the most powerful institution in the country aka military. Punjabis and Mohajirs and military were supposed to work each other, but Sharif's khota pun tried to upset that fine balance.

Thus the Sharifs were desptached to perform a lot of Umras and twafs and say a lot of nawafil. The whole idea was to let Sharifs come back to senses and realize that messing up with army is not a good thing, not even for a Punjabi PM.

Looks like all those Umras, tawafs, and nawafil in Hurmain Sharifain hasn't changed Sharifs much. They still are trying to rouse public against military. Well that ain't gonna happen. Sharif's alliance with BB was not going to work due to the differences in the economic approach.

BB is a pakka show-shaw-list (firm socialist), while
Sharifs have been among the few free-market politikos.

Sharif's alliance with Qazi is not going to work, because Qazi and other mullahs have no scruples. In fact it is better to make a deal with devil than sitting down with hypocrites like Qazi.

Here are few suggestions for Sharifs

  1. It is time Sharif's ralize that they are at their own, and they are a big power unto themselves.

  2. Time for NS to retire and become the new Abba Ji, and let the younger and more energetic SS to lead the party.

  3. Make a deal with military to take care of them, afterall a Punjabi can take care of Punjabi.

Then let BB lick her wounds.

p.s. this is the way forward for Sharifs. I hope they read gupshup as regularly as we do ;)

PPP may not be in one piece for it to attend the Aug 14 rally anway, because it’s leaders are on a daily basis now denying that there are differences and splits on their leaders dealings with the General.

No differences in PPP: Sherry

Pakistan People’s Party Information Secretary Sherry Rehman on Saturday denied reports appearing in a section of the press that there were differences among some party leaders over the PPP’s negotiation with the government for “the restoration of democracy”. “The press reports are not correct and seem to be spread by the anti-party elements who wish to cause confusion and dissention through disinformation,” Ms Rehman said in a statement.
