**PPP joins hands with PML-Q to beat Maulana Fazl **

ISLAMABAD: In a rare case of local political adjustment, the PPP and the PML-Q, have joined hands in Dera Ismail Khan to defeat former Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The PPP-Q League alliance and Jamaat-e-Islami’s boycott have seriously undermined Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s position in his hometown constituency, NA-24, Dera Ismail Khan. The Q-League is lending support to PPP candidate Faisal Karim Khan Kundi and even the JUI-F supporters believe it is almost impossible for their chief to retain his seat from DI Khan.

However, being a tactful and a shrewd politician, the Maulana has not left his fate into the hands of the strange bedfellows in his constituency. To ensure his comeback to the National Assembly, he is also contesting from another seat in neighbouring Bannu.

The NA-26 Bannu is believed to be a secure seat for the JUI-F from where the former provincial chief minister Akram Durrani’s son had won the bye-polls with a margin of 80,000 votes against his closest candidate a year back.

In DI Khan, the PPP candidate, Faisal Kundi is expected to win as a result of the alliance with the PML-Q. Fazl had won the 2002 election with a small margin and both the parties, the PPP and PML-Q, had obtained second and third positions, respectively.

The Q-League candidate, Sanaullah Miankhel, who withdrew in favour of Faisal Kundi in the local-level seat adjustments, has been accommodated at the provincial assembly seat where he is getting the PPP support.

“We believe that Maulana Fazlur Rehman will win the Bannu seat comfortably but there are problems as far as the DI Khan seat is concerned,” JUI-F NWFP chief Senator Gul Naseeb Khan conceded to The News.

Faisal Kundi had obtained 36,814 votes against 42,780 of Maulana Fazlur Rehman in 2002 while the Q-League candidate Sanaullah Miankhel had obtained 26,860 votes. As far as the Bannu contest is concerned, an independent candidate, Malik Nasir Khan, is getting support from the Awami National Party and the Q-League but the PPP has fielded its own candidate Malik Ashfaq.

“Fazl’s position in Bannu looks good as the people from this constituency vote for the Ulema as they did when Zia Durrani, Akram Durrani’s son, won the election with a huge margin,” said JUI-F office-bearer Maulana Rafiullah.

Late Naseeb Ali Shah of the MMA had won the 2002 elections from the same seat. Zia Durrani obtained 86,000 votes against his close rival who got just 5,000 after the death of the sitting MMA MNA, Naseem Ali Shah.

What a concept of unity these people have. One politician joining hand to stab another is unity for some people, now I know what do these people mean by "Great President".
