PPP government 3 years and counting

We are near the mid of October. December is around the corner, marking 3 years of the PPP government. The question is what has the PPP government accomplished in 3 years?

The 18 Amendment - great work. Really really good work. But even though credit is given to the PPP it should be given to all the Parties as well as they played their role.

What else?

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

NFC award, and the most of the credit for NFC goes to showbaz anyway...

Though 18th amendment is a good work, but with strings attached, and i hope they do cut them to keep it clean

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

I think its a coalition...not one party administration though...

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

I think the successful Swat operation, clearing Bajaur, cooling balochistan down, NFC awards, freeing the judges, dropping the NRO and particularly the 18th amendment are in the long term major successes. Practically its ineffectual performance, corruption scandals, failing to keep the PML-N on board has led to the restoration of the army establishments reputation, the Army is becoming more confident in asserting itself, openly taking over control of Afghan and India policies as well as ensuring that the Army keeps its economic strangelehold, and preventing any resolution of issues like Balochistan.

A lot of the latter bits can be attributed to some very clever media management against the politicians by the agencies (the "denotification", the degree scandal, Zardaris trip to France & UK) but Zardaris own lack of personality, lack of tact, bad reputation and the loss of BB have all seriously hit the PPP. To his credit Nawaz Sharif has shown a lot of maturity in this period, he has realised the fall of this govt doesn't neccessarily mean his success.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

Swat operation, clearing Bajaur: PPP had no role, it was presented, planned and executed by the armed forces. PPP's job was to perform some post military operation political reforms in those areas and set up civil govts writ which they totally failed in

cooling balochistan down: not cooled down at all, target killing of non-local population specially educationists continues non-stop
NFC awards: already mentioned above, its credit goes to showbaz more than ppp
18th amendment: CM mentioned in first post, plus it needs to be cleaned a bit
freeing the judges, dropping the NRO: these too are funny : D

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

Yes Give all credit to Showbaz for looting Punjab.Killing and corruption on the top.
Don't give any credit to PPP because they are not from Takht e Lahore.
Give credit to MQM because they can kill many in a day.
Give credit to Establishment for his continuous conspiracies.
Give credit to Judiciary for working as puppet of establishment.
However I count the failure of their government of not probing the 18th October 2007.
I am also afraid that perhaps they have compromised with the killers of BB Shaheed and this will cause great damage to the PPP. The only binding force of Pakistan.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

I do not count 18th amendment and NFC award as major successes (more hype than substance) when the PPP-led goverment has clearly failed to provide good governance during the last 2.5 years

The main focus of this governement obviously is not on governance but on how to weaken the accountability process. Zardari himself being under the shadow of the NRO does not help. His government machinery is built on the fortress of alliance aka CoD or reconciliation which actually = 'tum khao hum aankh band kar lein gey, hum khaein tum aankh band kar lena' for sustaining his rule.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

You are mistaken about the Swat operation and Bajaur, the Army had tried repeatedly to clear things up they needed political backing..they got that from the PPP and ANP. The Army as a force to put down insurgency is quite weak without political support..what has happened is that the Army doesn't allow the civilian govt to make any decisions during the post operation because it wants to take all the credit.

Balochistan is in an insurgency situation thanks to Musharraf, unfortunately the FC/Army won't allow any intiatives to take hold..but the moves have kept the door open in a situation that could have been far worse (apologising for military actions, Balochistan package and 18th amendment)

NFC, all groups made compromises, Shahbaz had no choice to comrpomise unless he wanted the PML-N to be doomed as a provincial party.

Freeing the judges and NRO, the govt flip flopped, but in the end they accepted public pressure..that is what democratic govts do..compared to the previous govt which didn't do either.

None of this is an excuse for a dismal performance by the PPP but they should be acknowledged.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

**I think that PPP has completed two years not three years. The thread is more like sarcasim rather than praising any achievement by the present governmet. In other thread it was your wish that all Bhuttos should be killed proving that you are not a well wisher of PPP. **

**I already opened a thread named “Performance of Zardari as President” but very few participated earlier. Read the following link which list the complete achievements by PPP government. **

**I still believe that weak democracy is zillion times better than perfect dictatorship, because absolute power corrupts absolutely. This has already been proved in 2/3rd of the dictatorship rule in Pakistan. Pakistan ko tabah karna hay to military government ko baar baar laao. **

President Zardari completes 2 years in power with landmark achievements
Sun Sep 12 22:28:52 2010 EDT

ISLAMABAD, Sep 08, 2010 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) – President Asif
Ali Zardari completes two years of term in power on Thursday, with a number of landmark achievements to his credit including 18th amendment, 7th NFC award,
political, development packages for Gilgit Baltistan and Balochistan.

The President took over the reigns of the government at a time when there was a
dismal state of economy, and law and order was a critical issue. The country
lacked an overall direction, while the extremists openly violated the writ of
the government. Zardari emerged out as the first President in Pakistans history
who strengthened parliament by curtailing his powers through the 18th amendment.

His other landmark successes include the 7th NFC Award,
Aghaz-i-Haqooq-i-Balochistan, political reforms in Gilgit-Baltistan and FATA
(Federally Administered Tribal Areas), reconstitution of the Council of Common
Interests, allocation of 120 billion rupees to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as net hydel
profit, launching of Benazir Income Support Programme to alleviate poverty,
increasing gas development surcharge for Balochistan, taking the militancy head
on and Benazir Employees Stock Options Scheme (BESOS).All these achievements
reflected the desire of the President to take the country forward with a spirit
of participation, consultation and equal opportunity in the formulation of
government policy at strategic and implementation levels.

On April 19, President Asif Ali Zardari signed into law sweeping constitutional
reforms stripping him of key powers in a move to bolster parliamentary democracy
weakened by years of military rule. The amendment rolled back decades of
meddling by military rulers and ended the head of states power to sack the prime
minister, appoint heads of the armed forces, unilaterally declare emergency rule
and dissolve parliament. It is my hope that the doors of dictatorship are closed
forever, the President said after signing the 18th amendment. We have reason to
feel proud… provincial rights and parliaments sovereignty have been restored,
he said. He said it was a dream of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to cleanse
the constitution of all undemocratic articles introduced into it by un-elected
and autocratic regimes.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, who assumed the new powers, hailed the
signing of the bill as a momentous occasion and termed it an unprecedented event
in the political history of Pakistan that a leader willingly transferred power
in a smooth process. The present government under the leadership of President
Zardari also managed to achieve significant progress made on the democratic
front, despite a major offensive in Swat and Malakand against militants and
local Taliban. It also goes to his credit to have sought international
assistance to help in the return of around 2.5 million Internally Displaced
Persons within three months.

President Zardari in a message on the completion of two years of democratic
government had said we have a future that promises dividends of peace,
prosperity and development provided we stand firm on the course of democracy. It
goes to the credit of President Zardari to bring the estranged friends in
Balochistan back to the national fold through recognition, reconciliation, and
restorative justice through the Aghaz-i-Haqooq-i-Balochistan. The President not
only made frequent visits to Balochistan, but also held regular meetings to
ensure that the decisions were being translated into reality so as to mitigate
the sufferings of the masses.

It was also under his initiation that the democratic government gave the people
of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa identities of their own. The
President firmly believes that by the end of the five-year term, a stronger and
prosperous Pakistan will emerge, crowned with an impressive record of
performance and achievements. Hailing from an agrarian family, President Zardari
had an in-depth understanding of the problems being faced by the farmers and
increased the purchase price so as to help them lead a better life. The
government has given protection to women inside their homes, outside, and at
places of their work; and empowering them to take control of their familys
resources.

Efforts for poverty alleviation remain at the heart of Presidents strategy to
reach out to the poorest of the poor under the Benazir Income Support Programme.
His deep interest in helping the most neglected sections of the society is
evident from his presence at all the events of BISP across the country. The
programme provides cash relief and now a Rs 3.9 billion program has been
launched with a cash grant of Rs 12,000 for each flood affected family.

The government under Presidents directives also restored workers rights,
bringing back those who were thrown out of work places, and ensuring
continuation of work for others. It is giving unprecedented freedom of
expression, while also respecting and patiently tolerating dissent. Under the
new National Finance Commission, the Federation sacrificed its chunk of share
along with reduction in collection charges from 5% to 1%.

The Federation also slashed its 52.5% stake to 44% in this award, making it the
first NFC Award with a national spirit to accommodate the demands of the smaller
4 provinces. Another significant area where the President played a key role is
the front against terrorism. President Zardari in his article in influential The
Financial Times said a democratic, strong and economically stable Pakistan, in
partnership with Britain and the West, can emerge as a role model for one and a
half billion Muslims. He pointed out that terrorism was not just Pakistans
problem and stability in central and south Asia depends on regional and
international co-operation to attack the terrorist threat politically,
economically and militarily.

We must seek to undo the environment under which terrorists thrive, from hunger
to hopelessness to poverty. And we should remember that as long as the human
rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir remain unaddressed, peace and
stability in the region will be elusive.

The President in his meetings with foreign dignitaries also elaborated Pakistans
role of a frontline state and informed of the loss of 2,700 soldiers, including
senior officers, and more than 27,000 civilians. Collateral losses total more
than $ 50 bn and are still being incurred at the expense of our economy and
prestige. No one can match our determination, resilience and sacrifices. We do
not need to be lectured as to how to conduct the war against violent extremism,
the President stated in his column. We want trade not aid, MOUs not IOUs,
remains the key slogan of President in all his interactions with foreign
dignitaries and reflects the desire of the new political leadership to take the
country out of years of neglect. On the economic front President time and again
stated that his party was determined to save the federation and rebuild the
economy and vowed to reshape a new Pakistan.

It was under his vision that economic planning reduced the fiscal deficit, gross
domestic product growth improved, while inflation decelerated, foreign
investment and foreign exchange reserves increased. Another major accomplishment
of President Zardari was to organize an international consortium - Friends of
Democratic Pakistan, aimed at helping the country out of its economic crisis and
meet its security needs.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

I am sorry what political reforms in FATA? I am seriously the first line is full of bull****. The FCR is still in affect from over a 100 plus years ago. Please tell me how FATA has been made better

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

lets for a moment accept all your arguments just for heck of it. now tell me, after all these justifications, i wonder if you still want to call any of them as "success" ? that was the question at the first place

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

yeah yeah yeah, same old establishment did this establishment did that and govt, with experience of 3 terms in power + almost 50 years of experience as being a political party was a bunch of toddlers right? and funny you only found 18th october 2007 incident something worth probing, let the country go to "khadda", and funny you are agreeing that "they have compromised with the killers" but still blaming establishment and judiciary.

supporting a political party is acceptable and totally normal, but being a an ignorant baby is not

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

3 years and counting. People are counting each passing day under PPP while PPP is counting the amount of looted money. And no one keeps count of the number of lies told.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

LOL:D right

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

LOL :D right.

Re: PPP government 3 years and counting

NFC to NRO to Freeing Judges, these are the duties rather favor. Overall, the entire tenure of this Government is a miserable failure. If you don't believe than please come back to Pakistan, regardless of your social and financial status, you will experience it.
