SUKKUR: At least six people, including a local journalist, were killed while 12 others sustained injuries in firing at a Pakistan People’s Party political gathering in Khairpur in which MNA Nafisa Shah was due to be the chief guest.
Sources said that the political gathering was organised by a local private contractor Zaffar Janwri. As the host announced that MNA Nafisa Shah was due at the venue in 30 minutes, two men with automatic weapons resorted to indiscriminate firing on the political workers and later managed to escape.
Ambulances were immediately called in as injured men lay on the ground bleeding. Hospital sources said that six people, including local TV journalist Mushtaque Khand, Professor Salahuddin Janwri of a local technical college, host Zaffar Janwri, Ghulam Muhammed, Munawar and Desh Muhammed Janwri were killed, while at least 12 injured were being treated, including Administrator TMA Khairpur Niaz Hussain Janwri, two local journalists Mukhtar Hussain Phulpoto and Faheem Hussain, as well as Ashique Hussain and Aijaz Hussain. Hospital sources said that four of the injured are in a critical condition and the death toll might increase. An eyewitness, Mazhar Janwri, said that an accused, Azizullah Janwri, armed with an automatic weapon resorted to indiscriminate firing at the gathering. He said that his aim was to kill Niaz Hussain Janwri. He said that the killer had threatened to kill him on numerous occasion, because he had suspected that Niaz was involved in his arrest a few months earlier. He said that when he resorted to firing, Azizullah was accompanied by deceased Zaffar. He added that the killer had a criminal record and was recently released on bail.
He said that Administrator TMA Niaz Janwri and some angry youth later ransacked the hospital and many vehicles. An emergency was declared at the Ghulam Muhammed Medical and Civil Hospital Khairpur where doctors were called to provide medical assistance to the injured. Nafisa Shah, MPA Syed Bachal Shah along with Acting Commissioner, SSP Khairpur rushed to the hospital to see the victims.
DIG Police Sukkur Dr Ameer Shaikh and SSP Khairpur Irfan Balouch said that incident was a clash between the Janwri tribe and denied any links of the incident to the reaction of the Sindh Peoples Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO). They said that the killers have been identified and raids are being conducted to arrest the killers.
MNA Nafisa Shah Jillani declared the event an act of political terrorism and said there were political opponents behind the incident. She demanded an impartial inquiry and said the attack was an attempt destabilise democracy.
Acting Commissioner Sukkur and Deputy Commissioner Khairpur highly condemned the incident. They announced a public holiday in the district today (Monday)
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari, PM, Chief Minister Sindh and Interior Minister Rehman Malik and others took serious notice of the incident and ordered probe.Reliable sources say that after the severe reaction of the nationalists parties and other parties to the SPLG-2012 Bill, the Interior Ministry by pursuing the reports of the intelligent agencies communicated a message to the ruling party leaders not to attend any political gatherings.
