PPP debacle caused by Salman Taseer

Nice article.
Salman Taseer thought that PMLQ would align themselves with PPP to form government. Zardari trusted him. But things went awry…

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Salman Taseer had convinced President Asif Zardari that he would manage to get the required number of legislators for installing a government of their Pakistan People’s Party and former ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in the province within a week after imposition of the governor’s rule.

“Taseer, who is really close to Zardari, has placed the position in an embarrassing position by failing to deliver and exacerbating the political crisis.

The governor had done so on the assurance given by Hussain and [cousin and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry] Pervez Elahi,” a PPP source revealed here yesterday.

He said the governor’s “over-confidence” of getting the required number of MPs could be one of the main reasons that necessitated the imposition of the governor’s rule by the president.

Zardari might have gone for allowing [former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s] PML-N to elect its new leader of the house in Punjab Assembly after disqualification of Sharif by court, but he trusted Taseer’s word,” the source privy to the development revealed

The governor’s rule was imposed on February 25 last and since then the PPP has managed to cause one defection in the PML-N besides sending just six dissidents back to their parent party in PML-Q in two weeks.

Besides a number of other reasons, the source said, there was a lack of homework on the part of Taseer who primarily banked on Elahi.

Re: PPP debacle caused by Salman Taseer

Yea Salman Taseer had Zardari believe that he can deliver the PPP a new Govt in Punjab within hours, comprising of PML(Q) and PPP. I even heard that Chaudry Bros. encouraged this thought to some extent knowing full well that many members of PML(Q) are more likely to align with N-League than PPP. Perhaps Chaudhry bros saw this as their stab to PPP for it driving them out of power which resulted in ouster of Musharraf and humiliation for PML(Q).

But what is clear is that, Salman Taseer failed to deliver. Rehman Malik failed to control the security situation, and the whole thing just blew up in their faces.

Actually this is a very big question here. Will Zardari remain be consistent to go with the "bright" felllows like Rehman Malik and Salman taaseer? I'm sure Zardari is competent enough to realize the utter failure of these two Cheetahs.
And i still have no doubt at all, that Zardari doesnt get rid of these two, he'll be in a situation very soon where he'll have to flee from the country while forgetting about the Presidency as well.

I think he'll ask atleast Salman Taseer to resign very soon.

Re: PPP debacle caused by Salman Taseer

Salman Taseer will stick around until Sharif Bros. case is decided on, and if they're qualified to return to power, he will leave. Having been exposed, he will not be in a position to work with a PML(N) CM, if that even happens.

Rehman Malik and his destiny, is anyone's guess at this point....he may fade into administration for a while and lay low.

Re: PPP debacle caused by Salman Taseer

Chaudhry brothers and PPP are ideologically apart. I would have bet from day one that PMLQ will never ally itself with PPP.

Re: PPP debacle caused by Salman Taseer

what is this ideology you speak of? i understand politically they have personality clashes/vendettas, but i have been searching for a glimmer of ideology in the two main political parties (PPP and PML(A/B/C.../Z) and there is very little.

I guess PPP has some socialist pretenses... near my home in karachi they had put up these posters saying things like "socialism is our economy" with a smiling zardari under it. but in the last elections it was PML that was advocating things like minimum wage increases, the supposed right wing party.

PPP is considered to be liberal, and PMLQ has affinity to religious parties.

But then how were PML-N and PPP in coalition govt in Punjab?

Not that I have a problem with any of their idealogies, but hate to break it to you bro, this is afterall an Islamic Republic. Nothing wrong with a political party named ‘MUSLIM league’ having a religious identity, in a Muslim republic. Cant believe Im actually defending the Q lota league :smack:

I will never defend PMLQ. He asked a question and I replied to the best of my knowledge.
I will never defend any party with any sympathy to Taliban.

this is wrong assesment.. it is zardari who is to blame.

he needed to prove he is big leader and wanted to get out of benazirs reflection, after getting punjab he would have said look now you have punjab govt and i had achieved which no leader in PPP has done before…

Re: PPP debacle caused by Salman Taseer

The reason many PML Q MPAs are not comfortable with PPP is not ideology but of competing interests and of accessibility to the top leadership...........These MPAs in a lot of cases have competed with PPP candidates in previous elections before defecting from PML N....If they were to join PPP gov now they will be sitting with the same people on provincial level and fighting with them at constituency level. Second thing is that PPP top leadership is not from Punjab...not saying anything wrong with it but it will be harder for them to influence them meaning they will have to again rely on the Chaudry's at a time when Chaudry's own influence is diminishing and Nawaz'a star is rising......PPP will prefer to be with PML Q after the episode of last few weeks but it cannot last long and will only create problems.
