PPP and its victim cards

I am glad no one has allowed PPP to become a martyr this time around, let them go to the polls with their current performance and let the people decide.

The PPP and its victim cards

**Why should the PPP not utilise a ready-made, God-given opportunity where political martyrdom is willing to save the day for them? As the history of elections in Pakistan tells us, the PPP has never campaigned for elections on the basis of its performance and good governance, nor does it plan to do that now.
**

**If governance was the PPP’s priority, its voters would not have to witness 18 hours of loadshedding despite four-and-half years of claims promising otherwise. Furthermore, inflation would not be in double digits, the government would have shown concern over large chunks of Pakistan’s textile sector shifting to Bangladesh and, hence, causing unemployment, Karachi would not be burning, the GDP growth target (despite being very low) would not have been missed and the government would have come up with a strategy to curtail the phenomenal budget deficit and stopped printing money to meet its expenditure. Isn’t all this enough to show that governance has never been a priority for this PPP-led government?

**
**If it was, its promises of 24 hours of electricity by December 31, 2009 would have been met. Has any government in Pakistan’s 64-year history changed four governors for the State Bank as well as four finance ministers? The Pakistan Railways situation keeps deteriorating but the railway minister sits comfortably. Certain figures are still in power despite corruption charges, our national airline currently suffers its worst annual losses and, finally, we have a prime minister who says that he was congratulated more on being convicted by the Supreme Court than on becoming prime minister.
**

**With this state of affairs, the PPP is doing exactly what it should do to contest the next elections. In the past, the PPP was victimised by the establishment and, hence, always plays the victim card. Benazir Bhutto’s assassination created an environment in the 2008 elections that allowed the party to cash in on a sympathy vote. However, the PPP was neither able to deliver good governance or keep its promise of bringing Benazir’s assassins to justice. So, in addition to the above victim cards, the party has invented a new one by not implementing the Supreme Court’s judgments and politicising the Court. The judiciary has also helped by not taking up cases across the board and giving the PPP an opportunity to build an impression of one-sided accountability.

**
**Coupled with this victim card is the demand for a southern Punjab province. It was never on the PPP’s agenda until March 2011 when the prime minister said: “The formation of a Seraiki province will be a part of the PPP manifesto for the next elections”. However, the PPP is bent on making a new province in this tenure to capitalise on south Punjab’s vote bank and on its grievances with the current Punjab government. Resolutions in the National and Punjab assembly have also been passed in this regard.
**

So, get ready for the next elections where the PPP will play its victim card and, this time, it is not against its traditional foe establishment but someone newer by the dynamic name of the judiciary. Little wonder, that the election campaign will be led by none other than Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

I am still afraid that the feudal system will again enable them to come into power.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

PPP will continue to sell its victim card until voters will remain interested in buying it. Last one year has silently ushered in a new era of card-making as PPP understands that a victim card made of judiciary will be relatively new and coupled with martyrdom adds-on, will do well in the niche market of sympathies.

But we can clearly see that this time PPP is not looking to cash in on its victim card alone. The new political order of coalition government, conceived and developed by Asif Zardari, may turn out to be highly rewarding for the PPP and its partners. The new order, which I believe will be further fine-tuned as elections approach, will help the 'coalition of the willing' to re-enter the parliament in a different shape. Even if in case of split mandate, they will still be able to cobble together an alliance that will bring them to a certain level of power in the new setup next year.

So bascially PPP's defeat in next election won't suffice. It will still manage to stay afloat with the help of coaltion partners and partners will be able to have some face through the traditional electoral performace of the PPP. Anyone who is interested in seeing parties receiving electoral reward and punishment for their performance, may be in for a great surprise after the upcoming polls.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

PPP has kept their rural Sindh votes intact, and this new Saraikii sooba card.

Its really hard to say that they might not win the next elections.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

I am sure that there will still be some thugs in Pakistan who will still vote for PPP after 4 years of misery, rapes, widespread corruption, govt. backed dacoities.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

I believe that we should not provide them with more victim cards before the next elections but still if people vote them in tough luck to them.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

Hello, who are "we"? The ISI, Army, Establishment, Takhte Lahore or paid mercenaries who killed Bhuttos? Care to explain?

Re: PPP and its victim cards

"We" are average Pakistanis who believe that this PPP government has completely destroyed the country and is the worst thing that could happen to Pakistan. Stop hiding behind ISI, establishment, Takht e Lahore etc because your incompetent and corrupt party is responsible for suffering of your own Sindhi brothers and sisters as well. More than 80% people believe PPP is incompetent, corrupt and useless mafia and rest 20% like you deny this because NOTHING will open your eyes ever.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

We are 'ordinary Pakistanis' who have nothing to do with army, ISI or takht e lahore who die every day due to inflation, law and order situation, bad governance and energy shortages.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

errr...Ali_Syed...were you talking abt this mentality?

Re: PPP and its victim cards

i think this time we can assume that PPP wont be getting the votes from interior cuz this time they hv sucked even the last drop of their blood,PPP has ingnored its jiyalas as well i hope n pray for them not to be rechoosen by the poor humanity in the name of bhutto..BHUTTO IS DEAD DONT KILL LIVING PPL IN THE NAME OF BHUTTO..ab jo PPP ka saath dai tho woh bhi bai zameer hai zardari ki terhaan..

Re: PPP and its victim cards

Yes I forgot I am a part of takht e Lahore :smack:

Re: PPP and its victim cards

PPP has won many seats in bye elections.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

Just like PMLQ/Musharraf won all the by-election seats prior to 2008 election..

Re: PPP and its victim cards

Such is condition of our people, they can even vote for someone who can serve them one time's food.

Some will still blindly vote for PPP in general elections and i have already admitted that NOTHING will change their mind. Luckily these people will be minority (except Sindh) and they won't be able to do much even if they form alliance with MQM, PMLQ, ANP.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

I’ll say lets make Zardari and Gillani kurbani ka bakra this time , and I am willing to vote for PPP :jhanda:

Re: PPP and its victim cards

Bilawal Bhutto Zinda baad

All these corruption stories are fake, PPP have performed brilliantly and very country match the progress Pakistan have made in last 4+ years!!! and for next 5 years, it will young and energetic Bilawal who would make the nation to fill his accounts in Swiss, donot be lost! it is your duty to deposit money in Bhuto Family's Swiss account and if SC object, then let it be jealous!!!

Re: PPP and its victim cards

In past all the PPP governments were never toppled by 'ordinary Pakistanis'. Those who I have mentioned in my post were the main culprits. When you say "we should not provide them victim cards" you automatically come under above categories definitely not under 'ordinary Pakistanis'.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

What about corruption cases of NS and his cronies? kuch un ke baare main be farmaingay.

Re: PPP and its victim cards

This time toppling should be through vote and not the establishment, it's about time people showed some political maturity.
