I have not seen that many pakistanis on one place calling them selves
desis.

Mmm I'm Pakistani and I refer to myself as Desi :)

Before here I mostly saw indians using this term when they were trying to
bond with pakistanis.

my father really gets ticked off with the term "desi". whenever he is visiting us and we (me/my wife) call someone Desi he goes "who are you?"
PS: He assumes that we are calling someone desi with an intent to insult :)

**Normally 'we' use the term Desi to not make any difference between Pakistani, Indian, Bengali or Sri Lankan people.
I use it a loot. Specially in front of non-desi people :p

Dunno why some ppl are so offended by the term 'desi' and the thought of being linked to shock horror Indians, Bengalis and Sri Lankans... I find the word nice and convenient as simply saying 'Asian' (which I did use earlier but normally try to avoid) can cause confusion on forums and it's a nice short simple term to use.. To me, a person having a problem with the word 'desi' would be like a French person turning around and saying they don't want to called European lol

i dont like desi ghee, but it doesnt meant that people in my pind will stop making it.

i used to call my hubby a paki as a term of endearment and a joke, he used to find this insulting, and would give me a 45 min lecture on racism and how an educated woman like me could make such a uneducated remark etc etc ladiadaaaaaa
anyway
he now uses the word paki for all and sundry....
i dont like desi ghee, but it doesnt meant that people in my pind will stop making it.

What do you mean very Indian looking? Please don’t feel offended but before 1947 we were all Indians unless I missed some lesson in history

desi is ok, desi-pun is insulting.
In literal sense a desi is a fellow countryman.
I refer every person from south-asia region as a desi. And I think its not only me, ive seen tons of ppl doing the same here. This is what it is!

I use it more or less in order to make a generalization. If I want to specify I might say "Paki", I call myself "Desi" though, as I'm from India.
