Power Supply or Motherboard?

My PC gave up on me yesterday. :frowning: The light on motherboard keeps blinking but computer won’t turn on. The fan doesn’t run either. I’m thinking the power supply is dead. Could this be the motherboard too?

This PC has 200W psu, I’ve an extra psu but it’s 250W. So can I use this 250W?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Power Supply or Motherboard?

Wait for the IT aficionados to arrive and they'll give you a competent answer, but my guess would be that it's the power supply that has died and it needs to be replaced.

Re: Power Supply or Motherboard?

if the form-factor (type of supply) matches, yes u can plug a 250w to replace a 200 watt

  1. disconnect power supply to motherboard, look at the connectors, blow on it, put it back, give another try. (why? why not).

  2. so if that doesn't work, disconnect just the motherboard, take the 250w powersupply, look at the connectors of both for the motherboard (identical?) then if yes, first connect 250w power supply connectors to motherboard, connect power cord to the 250w supply (before you start taking off the old one), attempt turning on computer.

  3. (if that was successful) replace the old one with 250w. if it wasn't successful, it would be something different, and in that case you would have done minimum work to eliminate power supply being the problem (providing 250w one is GUARENTEED working supply)

Re: Power Supply or Motherboard?

Yeah, phoonk didn't work. :) This other psu is missing a p2 connector. I tried it with just one connector (P1) and fan ran and light remained lit so at least I found the source of the problem. I just have to buy a psu with P1 and P2 connectors.

Thanks confused. You ain't so confused. :)
