Powell Says U.S. Has 45-Nation Coalition on Iraq
Tue March 18, 2003 01:12 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Tuesday there was a coalition of about 45 nations that support taking military action against Iraq, one third of which prefer not to be named.
“We now have a coalition of the willing that includes some 30 nations who have publicly said they could be included in such a listing,” Powell told reporters. “There are 15 other nations who for one reason or another do not yet wish to be publicly named but will be supporting the coalition.”

President Bush gave an ultimatum to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Monday: leave power in 48 hours or face a U.S.-led war that will start “at a time of our choosing” to force Iraq to give up its suspected weapons of mass destruction. Iraq denies it has such weapons.

U.S. officials released a list of the nations they said would be part of the coalition including: Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Hungary, Italy and Japan, which it listed as “post-conflict.”

The others were South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan

That’s a stellar cast. I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of the pointy sticks of the Eritrean or Ethiopian armies.

Get real; Latvia, Lithuania etc, sounds like a bunch of ‘failed’ states who require only a few million to give the nod. How are these countries national securities affected by Saddam…most of them are run by bigger dictators than even him.

Grasping at straws, this would be even funnier if you added Mongolia and Estonia…hold on a minute you have!!! :hehe:

I am still devastated that we did not get the all important endorsement of Cameroon!

Well if the rules of engagement involved 90 minutes of footie they would be invaluable, hey with the big occasion and all i suppose for a nominal fee (~$30 billion) you could have got Roger Miller too.

Well, let’s add this possible “ally” to the list … FRANCE!!!

“If Saddam Hussein were to use chemical and biological weapons, this would change the situation completely and immediately for the French government,” Jean-David Levitte told CNN.

“If the United States and our allies should face a new situation, not foreseeable today, a specific crisis, chemical, biological, then France obviously would stand by their side to show its solidarity in the face of a crisis of exceptional nature,” Villepin told Europe 1 radio in an interview.

Does anybody besides me find it to be odd that France is basically admitting that it believes Saddam has WMD and could use them in a war? To me this shows the utter bankruptcy of the French position in the UN.

Exactly and those who are on the list will not even participate in this war are just verbal assistens for US. Secondly, if you count those countries you should also ask their public about their opinion.

THIS war is the most illegimate in world history.

And history is preserved..... History does not say who was the ruling party or President at the time, it says which COUNTRY did what.

Breaking news..

Kiss Army and the salvation Army have also signed on to help in war efforts.

The tide of groups and countries supporting the war is increasing minite by minute.

Intelligence sources have confirmed that saddam will launch himself into space the moment lichtenstein, Malta and Monaco militaries join in the war.

Most likely you are alone (along with US president and generals). I think US diplomacy is bankrupt.

and I'm sure if Bhutan or Nepal (if not already on list) also join US, Saddam will leave earth right now.

Yes but Saddam has the Vatican City Guard on his side with it's own chemical weapons (holy water). This is shaping up to be quiet a 'to-do' I'm thinking of evacuating as soon as there is any talk of Swaziland troops on the move.

Who needs these countries anyway? I am not sure what the hubbub is. There is job to be done and those who can do it will do it. Others can continue with the UN circle jerk.

The simple answer to your question is that the nattering nabobs of negativity have continuously asserted that the US and UK are flying solo on this and that the rest of the world is opposed. That is only true if you define the rest of the world as excluding these 45 nations. The fact that 45 nations are supportive of this action is NOT a justification for the action (Indeed, it wouldn't matter to US if no other nations supported it). This FACT just shows the lie that some in the anti-war camp use to discredit the US position.

Hey man thats still 75% opposing war. The US and it's rag tag army are not representing public opnion where it counts (US/UK/Europe/Middle East etc).

Interesting head count theory .. Simple question: Does it matter to the US that 90% of the pop even in those countires oppose the war?

That is not a FACT, facts being brought up by the US by bribing the rest of the world who had no love for Saddam is not a validate fact.
