Powdering cloves ..

Another issue i have faced recently …

I needed clove powder for a recipe … since I didnt have it , I tried to finely grind the cloves ( whole ones ) … turned out to be a disaster .. It had moisture in the bud and it wouldnt powder up :frowning:

any tips on how best to grind cloves?

Re: Powdering cloves ..

you grind just the stem part and discard the crown/head/flower part.

Re: Powdering cloves ..

Hmmm...maybe dry roast it first on a tawa or something.

Whenever I have to grind spices for nehari this is what I do...may work just on cloves too.

Re: Powdering cloves ..

Does it need to be finely ground, or will it suffice if its ground in a pestle and mortar?

Re: Powdering cloves ..

yup i want to grind it finely , more like a powdery form …:hmmm:

Will try the tips that charmed and khalil mentioned … hope they work ..

Re: Powdering cloves ..

Really? That's odd.....I bought cloves once and had no problem making a powder out of them in my coffee grinder (that's what I use for masalas).

Re: Powdering cloves ..

yup roasting spices makes them easier to grind, does change the taste a bit(for better usually). Or you can put them in the sun for a day or so, I remember elder women in family doing that before grinding garam masalas. They used to spread the whole spices in a single layer and put it under the sun for a few days before grinding them.

Re: Powdering cloves ..

Instead of putting them out in the sun, you could probably put them in a low oven for a bit.

Re: Powdering cloves ..

i think u didnt get a good quality one.

Re: Powdering cloves ..

You can buy powdered ones from any grocery store.
Use your oven to dry them up a bit at low heat around 200 degrees Fahrenheit for a couple of hours .
