I needed clove powder for a recipe … since I didnt have it , I tried to finely grind the cloves ( whole ones ) … turned out to be a disaster .. It had moisture in the bud and it wouldnt powder up
yup roasting spices makes them easier to grind, does change the taste a bit(for better usually). Or you can put them in the sun for a day or so, I remember elder women in family doing that before grinding garam masalas. They used to spread the whole spices in a single layer and put it under the sun for a few days before grinding them.
