potty training...

when is the average time to potty train…when did your kids start…

my mil is all oh i did it when my kids were just over a year old? yeah right.

thing is i am a textbook follower and i follow mostly what they say, i think kids should understand abit about whats happening, not just force them to do it before its time. but maybe im wrong.

any ideas.?

ALSO how did you do it, how long does it take..

Re: potty training...

Heard kids are most receptive to the concept at 2 yrs 9 months.

Re: potty training...

I had a friend that had her kid "trained" at 1 year old.
She did this by having a very, very good understanding of her kid's regular "routine". She knew when the baby had to go and she had the diaper off and the bum on the toilet at/around that time.
Her claim was that a few weeks of this and her cost of diapers went down significantly!

I didn't try this so I can't tell you that it works for everyone. In fact, I happen to think that the same technique can work for everyone.

Mine was trained in her second year. I used Pull Ups for night time until just after she turned 3 and then those were gone too.

Re: potty training...

and how did that help in her kids personality building in the long term?

I am sorry but I have no idea why we have this obsession, to the verge of being competitive about when our kids are being potty trained and when would the stop drinking from bottle. I've seen ladies talking about it with pride that oh my kid started drinking from cup at age 1 or what not. How does that matter when they are 16, if they started pooping in commode at age 1 or 3, or even 5? Same with bottle.

I personally think (and ladies please dont kill me for it) that moms nowadays are creating unnecessary standards of parenting. I always told my wife not to be worried about our kids potty training and bottle quitting time, and now they are 6 and 9 and we dont even remember when they did all that, we just know that we did not lose our sleep on it, cause it just happened naturally.

Re: potty training...

They usually say 3 is the average age, but every kid is different. My son was trained 2-3 months before his third birthday and my daughter 3 months after her third birthday. But when both were trained, their night diapers were gone within days too.

Re: potty training...

I agree with TLK...Sumaiya (she's 5 now) was trained at around 3 and Mariam (now 2) is almost done with the potty training (she still wears pull ups at night). Its different for every kid and there's no real rush unless the kids are starting daycare or something.

Re: potty training...

We were aggressive in trying to get our son to be potty trained. We succeeded when he was around 2. But then around 2 years and 3 months, he was back to pooping and peeing all over the place. Now he is 2 and a half years old, and we have given up trying. He will learn when he wants to.
