Potassium level

If someone’s potassium level is really low..what do you recommend them to use to bring the level back to normal.

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks

I think bananas are high in potassium but I maybe wrong.

uffff....potassium???.................that's a tough one......how long ago did i have that course?????? 2 yrs or so..............which food it is in???? have to look it up to make sure, but i think there's plenty of it in (green) vegies. can u wait till tomorrow? :D

bananaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :p

Not good. They need to see a doctor and get a diet prescribed for them.

Serum potassium levels if towards low side, could be dangerous for health.I would suggest to see a doctor and let him decide what wud be the best way to raise it back to normal level....

Sometimes merely dietry support isnt enuff... dates and bananas are a very good source of it though. There are oral supplements available to improve the deficiency but the dose should be strictly followed accordng to description.

Go bananas :mudhosh:

Nescio....
what about over the counter Potassium supplements?

well.....i've gone through the literature......and potassium can be found in considerable amounts in virtually all foods......but if u really want one....then eat .......(potato) chips! yes they contains a lot of potassium...

but even if u don't eat a lot of chips, a normal variety diet has MORE than enough potassium in it to cover ur need.....so it's strange to hear that someone has a potassium deficiency.

normally when such a deficiency occurs it's not isolated in other words low potassium levels go together with high sodium levels or low calcium levels. usually there is an underlying disorder which has caused this disturbance, and there are a lot of them.

but Qrius, can I ask u: how did the person in question (=you?) find out that the potassium is low? becuz for this u need a blood sample so i think a doctor did it? didn't s/he tell something more about it?

sajal over the counter supplements are available in holland......and i think *shuold * not be available in other countries too, because a potassium overdose can be lethal in very short time. so only use them on doctor's advice.

Yes...potatoes and bananas are quick fixes for low levels of potassium.

But remember that bananas are best consumed early in the day, my ammi always told me:

If someone offers you a banana in the morning, take it, pay them a dollar and eat it.
If someone offers you a banana in the afternoon, take it, pay them 59 cents and eat it.
If someone offers you a banana in the evening, take it, thank them but don't eat it. :)

So many jokes…so little time…:hehe:

Thanks everyone for your valuable input :) Much appreciated!

Nescio, nope..its not me..its one of the aunty that i know..she did went to doctor and had tests..they found out that potassium level is low..doctor told her that its up to her to either get the medicine or she can control with food intake..She prefers to control it with food intake..she was told that bananas and potatoes contain potassium in higher level so she can use those..But the thing is that she's over weight and banana and pototoes are not great for her..so i thought to ask this question here..

I did found some more alternatives after searching and reading..just incase anyone wants to know them:

Foods high in potassium are: one-half cup of orange juice, one large banana, one baked potato, one-half winter squash, one cup tomato juice, one cup vegetable juice cocktail, one-half cup avocado, one-half cup cooked dried beans and one tablespoon black strap molasses.

:)

 phew! i’m glad that she went to a doc…the fact that the doc thought that it can be corrected (still) via food intake means that it isn’t that serious (yet) :k:
so make sure that she keeps herself to the diet, this way she can prevent worse things later on

Consultation with doctor.
