Postgraduate in PAK

What are the best and recognised universites for computer science in Pakistan. I’ll probabaly be looking to do a masters in a computer security related course. A few have sprung up on the UK. The costs involved in UK put me off a bit I dont like taking loans out.

What kind of costs are involved in Pakistan for halls + fees?

I noticed that some universites as ususal charge more for foreign students. Would a Pakistan passport make a me a local so I dont have to pay more?

what are the best universities for IT courses? around the Punjab areas. Not Karachi

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

I don’t live in Pakistan myself, but as far as I know the best universities for IT related courses are:

LUMS, ie Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lahore) - http://www.lums.edu.pk
FAST, ie Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology (Lahore) - http://www.fast.edu.pk
NUST, ie National University of Science and Technology (Rawalpindi) - http://www.nust.edu.pk

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

^ add GIKI (http://www.giki.edu.pk) and QAU (http://www.qau.edu.pk) to the list, and your list is pretty much complete for the best Science & TEchnology institutes in Pak.

I’ve personally met Comp Sci scholars from GIKI and QAU and have been impressed by the rigor of their programs.

LUMS is probably going to be the most expensive out of the ones mentioned here.

Not sure about the student status and tuition stuff.

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

Anyone know how good is COMSAT ( http://www.ciit.edu.pk/ ) ? Is it any good ? Heard alot about him here in Dubai but want to know your views.

P.S. I am looking to do bachelors in Multimedia field ( graphic desiging, web desiging etc .. ) in Pakistan and if someone knows any good university then please let me know.

P.S. 1 : Sorry risc to hijack your thread.

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

NUST looks good. I think I remeber stumbling across the GIKI website ages ago. Looked good. Shame the site doesnt seem to work at the moment.

Anyone here been to either ?

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

hello143:
COMSAT is a good institute and it has campuses in some cities of Pakistan. They have a nice selection of teachers. It is still not as well established as compared to other institutes but it is good enough. I have a couple of friends who are studying in COMSAT and they are well satisfied with it.

risc:
GIKI is very good if all you want to do is to finish your studies. It is situated in an area far from population. Though they have tried to provide enough activities on the campus but it can be boring at times. It is hard to make admissions in GIKI and the admissions for GIKI will finish in a couple of days, I guess.

NUST is really good. Here IT sector is filled with more people from NUST and FAST than any other institute.

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

Re: Postgraduate in PAK

i wouldnt recommend anyone to do postgrad from pakistan. we dont have enough of an infrastructure inplace yet, and secondly, I dont know about the acceptability of computer science MS from Pakistan in terms of market value..

giki is good for undergrad, not good for grad (im a giki grad), and its gone the crapper for the past five years. especially the CS/EE deptartments. I hear theres signs of improvement, but I dont really think it'll fix that soon. no university in pakistan is any good for grad studies except

  • NUST - they have a lot of joint programmes with universities abroad, so you meet a lot of people who are completing joint degrees (tuition paid) after putting a certain amount of time in Pakistan
  • LUMS - its the best department of computer science in pakistan today, grad or undergrad. It is the only place in Pakistan who's MS I would give any credence at all for. they tend to hire american Phds as opposed to other unis that just stock up on British Phds (who arent really very good, and spend the equivalent amount of time.. maybe slightly more.. in a university that an american MS would.. and mostly arent required to take any grad level courses themselves, yet teach them in pakistan)

rahi baat MS waghera ki, i guess the branded education in that department is Aptech or such, but I wouldnt recommend it because multimedia grads in pakistan are a dime a dozen and dont really have that much of a market.
