my cousin hd a blood testt for pregnancy and it was positive. then 2 days later she was on her period. wnet for ulrasound- no pregnancy. she never was. so how did a blood test thats positive happen? U NEVER get a false positive…do u?

You can still get a positive in a blood test even if the pregnancy is not viable. This usually means that a miscarriage had occurred, but there is still some sort if tissue mass or something still causing hcg levels to be detected. If that’s the case, a D&C should be done immediately.

even so, if she had some sort of miscarriage wont the docs have picked up on it whennthey checked her? she just said theres no pregnancy it was a false positive!!!

Sometimes a Corpus Luteum (filled with blood or fluid) can form a Cyst & is mistaken by pregnancy too and it shows false positive pregnancy test. This Cyst disintegrate by the time too or sometimes it starts growing and is mistaken for a Pregnancy. Because the corpus luteum contains hCG, it is possible that a pregnancy test will detect the presence of this hormone as being positive for pregnancy. Might be your cousin faced it and the cyst brokedown by its own and is now disappeared from her body.

The term chemical pregnancy means that the miscarriage happened at a point that a missed period and biochemical tests, such as an hCG blood test or a home pregnancy test (checking hCG in urine), were the only evidence that you were pregnant. The miscarriage happened before an ultrasound could have shown a gestational sac.

no test is 100% specific they may b false +ve /-ve early miscarriage is also a possibilty

Queen I have never heard of corpus luteum containing/secreting hcg. Yes it secretes progesterone and estrogen to facilitate pregnancy but i have never heard of it producing hcg and giving false positives.

She must be going through a chemical pregnancy. Its a very early miscarriage. Even after the miscarriage, hcg hormones take time to leave the system. Unfortunately i have had it a couple of times where my blood and urine test was positive but then a few days later, i ended up having my periods because the pregnancy was not viable and the embryo wasnt able to implant properly. It usually happens very early even before you go for your ultrasound but unfortunately it exists. It wasnt a false positive, just a very early miscarriage (chemical pregnancy)

The corpus luteum is what’s left of the follicle after the women ovulates. The “luteal phase” is the second part of menstruation. It only last for 12-14 days unless it receives hcg from a developing embryo. The embryo is the one that releases the hcg and tells the corpus luteum it needs to keep producing progesterone to support the developing fetus.
A cyst formed around a collapsed follicle will not trigger hcg unless there is a fertilized egg/embryo.
Nadz’ cousin’s situation sounds like an early/chemical miscarriage

Same thing happened to me. I also had a miscarriage where there was NO bleeding or cramping at all. My hcg kept tripling, and by all lab results I was definitely pregnant, but between 6-10 weeks there was nothing detectable on the ultrasound! My dr was pretty young, and I’m afraid not very experienced because he let me go all the way to 11 weeks before finally doing a D&C. It turns out that it had been an early miscarriage all along, but because of my extreme endometriosis (still undiagnosed at that time) placenta and fetal tissue had attached outside my uterus and that is what was still producing hcg. I was days away from hemhorraging

However, I also think her cousin has gone through a miscarriage because I mistook the blood test with HPT. Usually a Corpus Cyst is mistaken by a false positive in HPT.
