Have you guys watched raja rasoi aur anya kahaniyaan? It's on Netflix. Brilliant series of documentaries on Indian cuisine and its history.
The first episode which is on Rajasthan talks about chilies being introduced by Portuguese and are originated from Mexico.
Re: Portuguese brought chillies to India
its true. but tamarind made the journey the other way - it was always native to the subcontinent, europeans took it to central america where it is now beloved.
cashewnuts are called portuguese nuts in kerala. well.. "parangi" nuts. and later, this word "parangi" for portuguese is what became firangi for you north indians and pakistanis.
black pepper and its cousin the long pepper (pippali in kerala, also the word that became pepper in english) was the best heat most of the old world could manage until the americas were discovered. now hardly anyone uses long pepper, but anyone who has eaten the real nihari has had it.
Re: Portuguese brought chillies to India
I stand corrected about Tamarind- I meant to write jungle jableebi. Its been a long time when I learned about these as a Botany student at KU in 1980s!
Re: Portuguese brought chillies to India
Word Tamarind originated from Tamur-e-Hind (dates of hind) which is what Arabs called imli when they saw once they came to the subcontinent
(knowledge gained from above mentioned Netflix documentary)

It is still used by all the nihari restaurant in Karachi!
Re: Portuguese brought chillies to India
its not that "once they came to the subcontinent". the west coast of india was full or arab and jewish trading settlements before the arrival of europeans to displace them. even from pre-islamic days. the arabs were the spice trade link between south and south east asia and europe via sea and bedouin land routes.
Re: Portuguese brought chillies to India
Also, 2000 years after Rama, Bhima consumed Tamare hind and peppers while Bakasura was peppering him with blows that seemed to not affect Vrikodara.
OP is not only rude, he is clueless.
