Portion Sizes

So coming from a big family and cooking in bulk and then downsizing to cooking for only two people (one of whom doesn’t really too much anyway) is a challenge.

How many cups of rice is good for two people?

When I buy meat, should I pre-make the packets? Is 1/2 pound enough for two people or 1 pound?

Re: Portion Sizes

Depends if you guys are into left over…if yes then go with 1lb of meat and 1 1/2 cups of rice.

What i do when i order meat is half the chickens - each packet is basically half a chicken…it works out perfectly. With keema i do the same (1/2 lb packets) but goat meat i tend to keep in 1 lb portions cos we don’t usually eat it.

Re: Portion Sizes

We are into left overs…don’t mind them at all.

Last time I made 2 cups of rice and it was a LOT for the two of us. I think we were eating for 4 days straight. I guess next time one cup is fine.

Rice is always more than meat, that makes sense. In one cup of rice, half pound of meat?

Re: Portion Sizes

^ I usually make packs before freezing, I usually cook whole chicken n it serves us 2 time me huby n our little monster wth rice I make 1.5 n its enough for 3 of us. honestly speaking I also have this issue but you will learn wth time like 2 cups were too much so you know how much quantity next time.

Re: Portion Sizes

Or you can go with 11/4 cup. I do that at times when I don’t want too much left over, just 1 extra serving for next day lunch.

Re: Portion Sizes

That’s good…I am going to try my hand at biryani on Sunday I think. Let’s see how it goes! I’ll post pictures here!

Re: Portion Sizes

i also cook for two adults and use one cup rice and find that to be more then enough and often have left overs (im not a huge rice fan). 2 cups when I want loads of left overs.
one lb meat … also get left overs.

1 lb meat = 4 servings

Re: Portion Sizes

I always package my meat in 0.5 kg/ 1 lb bags. This should be about 4 servings. Of course it depends what you’re cooking it with, if you’re adding veggies or rice then it can easily be about 6 servings.

Re: Portion Sizes

1 cup rice = 2 people

1/3kg meat = 2 people

if I have botis I just count the number he will eat and I will eat (3 for him 1 for me)add one extra and cook.

Re: Portion Sizes

This my dear friend is an issue killing millions of us, my physician was telling me that India is seeing an epidemic in diabetes and heart disease, portion sizes are lot smaller than we are used to, rice should be the size of a computer mouse, meat the size of a deck of cards, fruits and veggie size of two palms, dairy the size of a tennis ball, I double the quantity of meat in my biryani, do cucumber salad in yogurt, and a hearty kachoomr, since white rice will rob the body of vitamin Bs I like to pair with Channa Salan. I remember people in Shadi eating 4 to 5 cup bryanni. Ordinarily I cook my rice with mutter or Channa Pilaoo to add nutrition. One cup uncooked rice yields 2 cup cooked, portion size is 1/2 cup cooked. If you eat with daal that completes the amino acid chains.

Re: Portion Sizes

When my mom was still living, I used to cook for her, I would bhoona 3kg meat and freeze them in small portions and just add ingredients as needed, like daal gosht, palak gosht, bhindi gosht, lauki gosht ect. This salan bhoona is time consuming, do it once for a month and be done.
