but those coolies - man, they come after you! i remember at the lahore airport, i mean i've never experienced it before, and all of a sudden you see these guys coming at you.
i mean here in canada you're used to doing things for yourself. pick up your own bags, put 'em in the trolleys and go to your cars.
just a really different experience :D
yeah tell me about it.....Wo to aap ke peechay aise aate hain jaise aap pakistan mein mehngaai kam karne aaye ho:)
Just go to the porter service counter, they have fixed rates. Dont bargain with the porters directly. This is company run service with fixed rates and after that you can give TIP to the porter, as much as you want to.
Ofcourse this is off the subject but I did not know this before so: if you have to make a phone call from inside the KHI airport and you do not have a cell phone, one has to buy a phone card (Rs 100.00- guys are standing by the phones with cards) and with that you can make may be 3-4 phone calls (total time may be 10 mintutes!!!!). I think thats a big rip off. Paying Rs 200 to a porter is not bad especially while coming back as he helps you pick up the boxes for customs if needed, for strapping & then for the airline counter. Overall I think our experience with customs & immigration people at the airport was quite pleasant. :)
like someone said…go directly to the booth…the porters give you a ticket, and you pay at the booth right before you leave. don’t bargain with the porters
Creative: that didn’t happen with us it was just my mum and me travelling when coming to pakistan…and we had to pay the 100 ruppay…and on the way back i had to pay the porter and then some!
I speak to myself b4 i speak to any1 else…but its funny how we spend around $200 on cell phones, $50 bucks on jeans, pay interest on homes and cars we cant afford..etc etc.. .but wont pay more than $5 to a porter in pakistan who has a family but no life or cant get married due to poverty…quite ironic…
again…im also a victim of my own hypocrisy for that matter:bummer:…but hopefully i can change it…inshAllah:)
P.S. not saying tht i spend like tht…but generally speaking
I dont spend $200 on a mobile phone it comes free with my discounted line rental.
Jeans cost a few quid like £10 for the same stuff minus badges
I would happily pay a porter the going rate provided he did what I asked withought the hassle. e.g. not pushing me off my own trolley or knicking off with bags and trying to sell me fake currency or at dodgy conversion rates. Keyworld being GOING RATE I dont see why I should pay Rs.500 for what is Rs100 work. There are plenty more needy.
^ Agreed. I don't spend $200 on phone. I don't shop a lot here in US so the question of spending $50 on jeans doesn't arise. When the question comes about the porters, all they have to do is take the luggage from inside to outside by the car. I understand that they (porters) have a family to support and I help ppl in every way I can (if I can, I don't show them empty dreams and then say I can't do it). But I don't like the fact that they try to force you into paying Rs. 500 more than the actual work. And If you look at it, there are so many ppl out on the streets of pak who don't have jobs, whose homes are their own 'Chaadars' and who didn't taste good food in God knows how many days. And if you would compare them with porters, you'd see that porters are not the last ppl in Pak who have the biggest needs.
By the above statement, HHL in no way says that you don't pay extra to porters in order not to support them.
