Kenya’s government is planning to build a massive new port - expected to be the busiest
in East Africa, serving neighbouring countries such as Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo.
But the port is near Lamu, a beautiful, unspoilt island, which centuries ago dominated the region’s
trade in ivory, gold and slaves. Some local residents are looking forward to the wealth they
hope the new port will generate. But dhow captain Fahad Mohamed Musa fears that the development
will hurt local fishermen.
