So how is it determined what is the most popular thread of the day/week/month?

Its an automatic system, threads are not chosed by anyone.

Threads with most replies and views end up in that row.

I guess the one in which people take most interest by responding and is beneficial. And no, the smilies do not count as responses. :) . Smilies only count when there is something written along with it.

^ Including cafe will mean that all three categories will be dominated by cafe all the time. We will incorporate cafe separately.
