I really dont see any major practical reason for polygamy as long as our female population has ample opportunities to succeed. I think the religion allows it simply because its a biological tendency for a man to take on more than one woman - so if he’s going to cheat anyway (which many men do in monogamous relationships), then he ought to take the responsibility of taking these women as wives.
I’m sure if you told a married guy who was getting horny at his next door neighbor that if he still wants to go to heaven, then he has to marry her before he screws her - he would either
- change his mind and try to stick to his own wife
or
- marry a second one and then live for the rest of his life wondering why he was such a horny imbecile in the first place.
I like God. He knows how to make men suffer.
